Steve was my best friend for 30 years. Steve was a guy who was there at so many milestones in my life it's hard to imagine new milestones without him. Boxing days and fireworks nights have had Steve booked on the calendar for so many years he has become synonymous with his presence.
Steve an I met at School. We knew each other in first year but it was the start of the second year when we became in the same class. We both had an interest in video games and cartoons. He had more of both (and in a tradition that would continue for the next 30 years better) as the boy who had cable and 2 video game systems. Weekend visits quickly followed and then on to glorious summers of my youth. A sequel to a game came out recently and when asked if I wanted to play, I said that unless it was in Steves flat with Steve, Melvin, Leona and Patricia it wouldn't be the same.
Steve and I grew up together Girls, Booze, Jobs, Houses, Love and loss. Steve was tied into all my stories from boy to man. He was my playmate, my wingman, my tech support, my best man. The world seems a little duller without him and I find myself without a map in many places where I would have asked for advice.
Steve was a part of my family. My parents both said to me that they were glad that I had a friend like Steve. My brother Tom and his friend Alister were regulars on the drunken escapades of our twenties.
If I had to describe Stephen to another person, I would have said he was a private person who loved to be entertained. He was boundless in his love for distraction. He was happy to live in the world but he loved to escape it. He always had a big heart for the people he cared about but was wise enough to be careful about who he let in.
I will always miss him and I will always be proud he chose me for a friend.
Peter Young.
