There are so many great things I can say about my friend Ken – much loved and adored father to Debby and David, beloved grandfather to Rosie and Sophie and remembered with love and affection by his nieces, nephews and good friends, some of whom are here today and others, hundreds of others, who are unable to attend, due to Covid 19, but are remembering and thinking of him today and raising a glass or 2 in his memory.
Ken was the youngest son of Florence and Sidney and younger brother of twins Ronny and Sid. He left school very young and worked as a market porter in Covent Garden before becoming a successful bookmaker for many decades starting in the 60s. He had many betting shops and enjoyed attending the races including ascot, where he ran a betting booth, with his father-in-law Paddy and son David. He sold up in 1984 and moved to Monaco, he travelled the world and enjoyed life to the full, living life in the fast lane and boy did he enjoy himself.
Ken returned to live in the UK in 2012 after living in Monaco for 28 years, since returning he lived with Debby and me and regularly visited his son David and granddaughter Rosie and her husband Ben. He and his son David are avid Millwall supporters, and another special passion was golf, he loved playing with his many friends and he tried to play every day if he could, and he was a keen and enthusiast member of many golf societies and won many trophies over the years. Although he was divorced from his wife Jane in 1978 they remained close and he lost his beloved partner robin in 2005.
He became ill in August 2017, but until very recently was able to enjoy weekend breaks in Europe with Debby Rosie, Ben and I and also attended Rosie’s wedding in December 2017. He was very proud of Rosie. Her ‘little Yumpty’
The family have received some wonderful tributes to Ken. ‘Ken will be remembered by so many, for his sense of humour and fun loving nature.’ Another, ‘Ken was a wonderful friend, we share so many fond memories in France with Robin, he was special and we shall always remember his charm, wit and kindness.’ Another ‘There are no words, but know Ken was a lovely man, Chris thought the world of him, they are together now being ‘golf bandits.’ and lastly, ‘He was a character and a great example of his generation, he will be missed by lots of people who knew him and enjoyed his personality and steadfastness’ – There are so many heartfelt tributes.
Time to say goodbye Ken, so long, rest in peace. Proud to have known you.
