Walter McEleavey (18 Aug 1936 - 12 Jun 2020)
Funeral Director
In loving memory of Walter McEleavey who sadly passed away on 12th June 2020
Walter McEleavey – known as Wally to his close friends - was a much loved Dad, Grandad and friend. He held old fashioned values and was an Officer and a Gentleman.
Born in Co Durham in 1936, he attended King James Grammar School and excellent in Mathematics! Always trying to impart his knowledge to his grandchildren with their homework!
He met and enjoyed over 25 years of marriage with Jan and raised 5 great sons (one of whom was a twin and sadly passed away shortly after birth) as well as many foster children who they treated like their own. He would recall how he used to walk miles to meet Mum – whatever the weather, because she was worth it! He would tell us how she loved to dance, but he had two left feet. But our Dad did love going for a run. He would joke in later life how (when the medicines would improve his bad back), he felt he could run again.... but not like when he was younger, only up and down the landing!
Walter/Dad served 22 years in the Army and completed his service as a Sargeant, receiving an ‘exemplary’ certificate. He would enjoy telling ANYONE who would listen, to his many fascinating stories of when he was in the Army, his adventures and travels.
He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone, but wouldn’t be so gracious to accept help from others. Never complained, even when he was in pain. He would just say ‘soon be Christmas, get some nuts!’
His daily routine would often include a trip to Costa for a Latte or Cornish Bakehouse for a Bacon Butty – or two! He would say how he talks to people about how proud he is of all his children and grandchildren of what they accomplished and showing them photos.
He would drive along the road and let EVERYONE out from the side streets (even if we were in a hurry). He would stop in road to let people cross the street – even when they didn’t want to! Frustrating at the time, but looking back, it raises a smile.
He was also set in his ways and often be stubborn. Liked things to be done properly. Recently, his neighbour told me how she offered to sort his bins and recycling. For quickness, she placed some recycling in the bin but then Dad insisted she get it out. She is only petite and literally almost fell in the bin trying to retrieve the item, but he insisted, so she did as she was told!
He loved a good roast dinner too. Dad would often go to the Toby Carvery or other restaurants with Mike and Sally. Always had extra roasts and gravy. He would go into great detail to explain what was on his plate and how much he enjoyed it, always saving the meat until last.
He also enjoyed staying at Terry’s too and looking after the cats. A good excuse to sit in the hot tub, he would never turn that opportunity down!
Dad was a very proud man. He loved his family and we loved him. We will miss you Dad. RIP now with Mum, you have waited a long time to see her again.
Donations are welcomed in memory of Walter / Dad to a charity of your own choice.
