In loving memory of Kenneth Hopwood who sadly passed away on 2nd June 2020.
Born in Blidworth in 1928, he lived all his life in the Mansfield district. Following an elementary education he attended Millers’ Business College and Mansfield Technical College. Leaving school at 14 he obtained a position in Sherwood Colliery’s clerical staff and remained there for all his working life apart from 2 years National Service in the RAF. Being fond of walking he was a member of Mansfield CHA Rambling Club and served as their Secretary in the early 1950s. At Sherwood Colliery he progressed from Wages Clerk to Cashier then Chief Wages Clerk, then in 1969 was appointed Admin Officer, a position he held until retiring in 1987.
He met his wife June in 1953 at the Mansfield Rambling Club and they married on 23 June 1956 at St Mark’s Church. They had 3 children, Nigel, Timothy and Lisa, all christened at St Mark’s. He enjoyed spending time with his children and 5 grandchildren - Gemma, Sam, Libby, Rufus and Kitty and recently became a great grandfather to Zara.
He took great pride in his garden and grew his own fruit and vegetables when the family were young. He enjoyed walking and holidays at home and abroad, especially the family holiday destination of Scarborough. He was a very quiet, kind and gentle man, loving crosswords and word games - particularly Countdown! - reading, classical music, history and keeping up with current affairs. He had a quick, dry wit and regularly kept the family in stitches with his one-liners! He celebrated 60 happy years of marriage to June in 2016 with a card from the Queen, and just missed their 64th wedding anniversary by a couple of weeks. He lived a long and full life, but he leaves us with many beautiful memories and will be greatly missed by all his family.
