In loving memory of Kenneth William Chine who sadly passed away on 10th April 2020.
Ken was born on 24th September 1930 to Bill and Ivy Chine in East Ham London, the oldest of 3 children.
He moved to Somerville Road, Chadwell Heath with his sister Alma in 1938 where his brother Ray was born in 1939. The family were evacuated to the country when the raids on London started but his Dad remained as he was a bus driver. The family returned not long after, and Ken would help on Rudge’s Farm at the weekends and holidays, especially with the Shire horses and on a milk round.
Ken went to Wanstead County High School and then in 1947 joined the Commercial Union Assurance Company in Gants Hill. In 1948 he did his National Service with the RAF in Hong Kong, returning to continue working at Commercial Union in Life and Pensions for 40 years until his retirement in 1987.
Ken met Jackie Lawrance at work, and they were married in July 1956. Not long after they moved to a new house in Gidea Park where their two daughters Lesley and Carol were born.
Promotions at work meant that Ken and Jackie moved several times during their married life – Nottingham, Cheshunt where Graham their son was born, Harpenden, and Ingatestone when Ken became Regional Life and Pensions Manager of the centre in Romford.
Ken and Jackie had six grandchildren who brought them great joy and were extremely supportive and proud of all their achievements.
When Ken retired in 1987, they moved to Monks Eleigh in Suffolk and both took up bowls which they continued to enjoy when they moved to Braintree ten years later.
Bowls was later to play a big part in Ken’s retirement, especially after his wife Jackie died suddenly in 2002, and he became involved in running the bar, working as the Green Ranger and on the management committee. His support of Braintree Bowls Club was recognised when he received the County President’s Certificate of Merit in 2016, an honour he and his family were immensely proud of.
Ken moved to the Hawthorns Retirement Home in 2017 and continued to enjoy and live a very active life with his family and friends until he suddenly became ill and died at the age of 89 on 10th April 2020 as a result of Covid-19.
We have had a private funeral due to the current restrictions and we plan to have a memorial in the future so that his family and all of his friends can have the opportunity to pay their respects and say goodbye.
