Born Robert John Larcombe on 29th May 1944. He was the son of Dorothy and Herbert Larcombe in the Southwell area of Nottinghamshire. He was normally known as Bob or Bobby.
They moved to Somerset when he was about 6 months old.
I met Bob at school when we were about 6. He was clever, popular and often a bit of a naughty pupil as the schools in Chard. Bob passed his 13+ and then went to Yeovil Tech. He left school at 15 and went to work for a tool making firm in Chard.
At 17 ½ he joined the Royal Engineers and went to Southwood Camp in Farnborough.
We got married several months later 19th May 1962.
Bob then went to Osnabruck in Germany, then to Chatham, Singapore, Borneo, Ripon, Farnborough, Chatham again, then Hameln, Waterbeach, Northern Ireland, Kenya, Canada, Cyprus, Berlin and ended his service with the regulars as Gibraltar Barracks in Farnborough. He immediately was asked to join the TA so moved across the road to Minley Manor, where he finally finished his military service. We then moved to Frimley, where we remained.
Bob went to work for Sharps as a bedroom designer on leaving the regular army and stayed with them until he became ill with cancer.
He had treatment at Frimley Park Hospital and Guildford and finally went to Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Farnham, where he died on the 13th May 2020. We had a great life together, except for when our son Michael died, 25 years ago.
We have 2 sons David and Paul, 5 grandchildren, Karis, Katherine, Matthew, Stephen and Lewis and 3 great grandchildren, Blake, Bridie and Bobbi. They all loved their ‘Granfy’, as he was known, very much and because they lived so near, they all knew him very well. Bob also has 3 ½ sisters, Pat, Sarah and Jane who live in Taunton.
We had a wonderful life together with our friends and family, too many to name. I have had many phone calls, cards, flowers and messages, all saying how great it was that they knew him, liked or loved him.
As you have heard, we have travelled a lot, I was not able to join him on all his trips but did when I could. Most of our holidays were spent in Somerset, Skiing or recently, cruising.
I will miss him very much as I am sure a lot of people will, as he was a great, wonderful, clever funny man who I loved very much.
Sometime after lockdown we hope to have a celebration of his life, which I believe mostly was a very good one. Thank you all for sharing some of it with me.

Dear Joan,
You probably won't remember me but I was at Holyrood with you both. My sister came to see us yesterday and mentioned that Bob had died, I can't remember who told her but she lives in Ilminster. I have read Bob's history that you have written on this page and had no idea that he had served in HM forces. He would have been the life and soul of his comrades, from memories I have of him at school. I remember you well as you were the heartthrob of many boys at school. I am so sorry to hear of his death and of the suffering he must have undergone not to mention your own fear for his life etc. I understand that you lost a son 25 years ago, we too lost a son aged 32 in 2006. If you do remember me I was quite in to music and played roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan operas at school. I kept up my music for all of my life but lost the sight in 1 and a 1/2 eyes eyes so can no longer read music and it is very difficult to read words and numbers. I married my wife Pat in 1964 she was in the Central Band of the WRAF and we had three sons. One is an international organist https://philipscriven.com/ l and the other Paul is a builder. I rang my friend Roger Riste and told him of Bob which saddened him too, Roger gas Parkinson's disease. Joan I am so sorry for your loss but I am sure that you had seen Bob in discomfort and is now at rest and peace.

With this message comes Love and happy memories of the smiling Bob.

Sincerely Yours,

Pete Scriven (Schoolmate to you both)

Dearest Uncle Bob,

You were the best uncle any niece could ever have. I always really looked forward to seeing you. From the times you used to pop by mum and dads between meetings, the times we shared at home and not least our skiing holiday :-). Happy times.
I will remember you, always with a smile - so young at heart, funny, generous and kind.
I raise a glass (of scotch) in your honour and hope the blackbird inside will be bursting into song wherever you are now.
You will be missed by Richie and I very much, and I’m sure many other people too.
Don’t worry - we will all look after Joanie - and make sure she is ok.

With all my love - Jacky (Larcombe) xxxx

We have a store of wonderful memories of our lovely friend Bob. Many years ago the four of us went to the Granada TV Studios in Manchester. On the set of the Houses of Parliament you could sit on the Government or Opposition benches and about 50 of us debated the pros and cons of smoking. Bob was in his element and on top form and he kept crossing the floor and changing sides. Everyone was in stitches. How fortunate we were all those years ago to meet Bob and Joan and Michael and David in Singapore. How lucky we have been to remain lifelong friends. God bless you Bob for being you. Our hearts and love go to you Joan and David and Paul and all your lovely family. Harry and Marie
