I first met John when I moved to Nottingham to work in industry in the late 1980s. John was keen to promote strong links between the university and industry and pioneered what became the YES programme to promote entrepreneurial spirit in young academic scientists. I had the pleasure of working with John on this and several other projects. A true gentleman, John was very supportive of so many people and he will be sadly missed. My sincere condolences to Jennie, Caroline and John's family.

In loving memory of John. John was a loving caring cousin who always found time to offer valued support and assistance. He was a brilliant man who was tragically taken from us so quickly there was no time to say goodbye. David and I will miss him very much.

John was an exceptional scientist and a wonderful mentor to many junior researchers, of whom I was one. John provided me with practical and intellectual support during a critical point in my research career when as a young female scientist and mother, I needed it most. I was able to stay on in science thanks to John. I am so sorry to hear of his loss. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
