In loving memory of Patricia Taylor Hughes who sadly passed away on 8th May 2020
Pat was born in Inverness, Scotland. An only child, she spent most of her childhood living on the family farm. She attended Elgin Academy, before getting her first job as a clerk at Cairds in Elgin. In 1965 she joined the WRAF, moving to High Wycombe to learn her secretarial trade. A posting to Singapore was to change her life forever. During her time in the far east, she was the only female bagpiper in the RAF pipe band. Pat enjoyed swimming, and joined the sub-aqua club, where she met and fell in love with David. They were married in 1968, Cathy being born the following year.
Pat, David and Cathy returned to the UK later that year. A posting to RAF Scampton took the family to Lincolnshire. Pat started work at the Agricultural College at Riseholme in 1972 as a part-time temporary clerk. Her career progressed over the next 20 years; by 1994 she was the School Manager of the Agricultural School based in Caythorpe. A final career move took Pat to the University of Lincoln, where she worked as an administration manager in the library. There she remained until her retirement in 2007.
Pat, David & Cathy lived in Nettleham for several years once David left the RAF. In 1984 the family moved to Wasps Nest, where Pat & David had 29 happy years. Pat enjoyed gardening, playing badminton and had a lifelong love of cats, usually having at least 2 with her. Pat loved holidays and her & David went to France many times.
Unfortunately Pat developed memory problems early in her 60s. By the time David died in 2013, they were more pronounced. She found it impossible to accept these changes & how they affected her life & remained fiercely independent. A move to Nettleham to be near Cathy & Steve made things a little easier; she would go round for a meal most evenings. While her grandchildren, Hannah & Nathan never really knew her before dementia changed her, they were able to spend time with her. A final trip to Scotland to see family and visit her childhood farm home in 2015 was made.
Pat had a stroke, a bleed in her brain, in 2016. Following this she had to be cared for in a nursing home. She gradually declined over the next few years. Rest in Peace Mum. xxx
