Mum was a loving, caring, modest person and unsung hero, a rare gem, who took care of most things, including her hand written biography, which it seems fitting to include herein: [edits are in brackets]

[I was] Born 6th September 1943 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Mum at 19 years was evacuated during the war to ‘Shardeloes’, a beautiful mansion turned into a maternity hospital for the duration of the war. [I] lived at Percy Road in Shepherd’s Bush as a young child. [I] Went to a nursery when mum gave birth to Barbara in 1947 in Huntingdon, and was looked after by mum’s friends when she went to Hammersmith Hospital to have David. At 5 [years old, I] went to Victoria School, Shepherd’s Bush.
Moved to Daffodil Street when I was 7.
Attended Wormhole Park School. Transferred to Canberra School in White City (newly built).
[My sister] Chris was born in 1952 at home.
Passed my scholarship to Burlington Grammar – was youngest in the class. Was streamed into the top class, but found it very difficult. Met my best friend Margaret Newman & stayed with her in Bayswater at holiday times – her family were very hospitable & welcoming. Awarded form prizes two years running.
Left school when I was 16 – was very happy! Had 5 GCE’s – Art, History, Maths, French, Latin. Won the school Art Prize.
Took holiday job in summer at UPM Ltd as a Records Clerk where mum worked as a secretary. Was planning to transfer to Barrett St Technical College in September to take up dress designing. When hearing that there’d be little artwork involved, decided not to attend. Continued at UPM Ltd for 9 months until mum got me an interview in 1959 at Berwick Studios as a fashion artist.
Went to St Aygulf, South of France with my friend Anne Semper at 18 years old, and again with Anne the following year went to the Costa Brava in Spain during the summer holidays. To pay for both holidays, took extra jobs at White City Stadium (greyhound racing); worked two evenings a week at Wigmore Hall as a steward; finally worked all day Saturdays at Bentalls, Ealing Broadway on Ladies’ Knitwear!
When studios let some of our rooms to architects, the second set of architects, Mr Brown & Mr White, had a secretary Jean Isherwood, who it turned out went to Burlington School & was a year below me. We spent lunch times together & went to jazz clubs at the weekends. Jean stayed with me at Daffodil St when my family holidayed in the West Country. Having met her future husband at a friend’s wedding, Jean married Bob & emigrated to California. [...] then on the eve of my 21st birthday, went with Barbara to 100 Oxford St (Jazz Club), where I met David Kane! in 1964
We had holidays in North Yorkshire; Pembrokeshire, Wales; Argyl, Scotland; Lym Regis, Dorset; Cornwall, Lelant.
Married in Alfriston, Sussex in 1971 – we lived in an attic flat in Chiswick. After 15 years, left Berwick Studios & did a 6 month secretarial course at Richmond Adult College. After this I found work in 1975 at Beechams, working in their international Division, where I worked for Eileen Mann (Factory Coordinator) & Norman Francis (Supply Coordinator) as their secretary. I stayed there for 8 years during which time Eileen was promoted to Manager of Beechams Products Overseas & I became her secretary. Dad & I bought a little house in Dean Rd., Hampton in 1978.
I left in 1983 to have a baby
In 1986 Dad & I bought our house in Percy Rd., Hampton. Over the years we’ve had holidays abroad in Serfaus, Austria; Florence & Elba; Corfu, Greece; then Scilly Isles in GB; Algarve, Portugal (with Anthony 2 years old).
We’ve had holidays in Dorset, Cornwall, Venice, Paris, Rome.

-------------------------------------------
(afterword by Anthony)
Mum was a person who gave her all no matter how big or small the role, and was a well loved assistant of the children at Hampton Junior School, whom she taught art to and supervised at lunchtimes and break times for over 15 years. She loved her neighbours and the calming sound of piano notes wafting over with the outdoor breeze.
Mum & Dad also enjoyed holidays in Venice & Sorrento in Italy, & sometime later due to health reasons switched to land based travel and the quieter enjoyment of visiting friends and family and home stay-cations. There have been wonderful Christmas times with family in Somerset, enchanting times in Gunnersbury park, and walks by the Thames with local friends. Mum loved art and enjoyed visiting art galleries in London with friends. Mum was keen on history, especially the biographies of the classical music composers, and enjoyed theatre going with dad. Mum was a quietly celebrated member of the Hampton watercolour arts class, and went with friends there to keep fit classes, while cooking excellent meals for family from time to time.

We already miss you mum, love xxx

Auntie Shirley, I have so many happy memories of you that it’s difficult to know where to begin...but here goes!! I used to love your visits at Xmas time and during the summer as well. They were the occasions throughout the year that I used to look forward to the most (particularly at Xmas). The near combative board games, your disapproving looks to Dave if he wasn’t following your instructions and the sheer enjoyment and excitement of yours, Dave’s and Anthony’s company.

Not only that though, I will never forget your incredible words of support and kindness given to Louise whilst we ourselves were going through an incredibly tough period in life. I hope somehow you know how much those words meant and helped not just Louise, but myself as well.

I’ll miss you so much, but will cherish the memories I have of you. Lots of love always from Sean, Louise and Archie. X

Fun Art donated £50 in memory of Shirley

Shirley came to our Fun art group in 2012 and she was a much loved and admired member for many years. Shirley had a wonderful talent for painting, though she found it hard to accept the praise that we all piled on her. She was such a modest lady! She is much missed in the group . She was a truly lovely person. With love from teachers Di and Jane, and all Shirley’s friends at Fun Art.

Dear Shirley,

For as long as I can remember, I’ve admired your artistic talent. Your sketch of my dad was an inspiration to me as a child; thank you for the joyful times spent messing around making my own ‘art’ as a result. While I’ll never come close to your natural skill, I promise I won’t stop trying.

You’ve always been the image of gracefulness in my eyes, and will remain so in my memory and heart xxx
