Mum passed away on 10th April 2020 (Good Friday) aged 87. The past few years were very difficult for mum and, despite our best efforts to support her in the bungalow, her declining mobility and other complex physical and mental health issues made it necessary for her to move into Russell Court Nursing Home at Longfield in July 2018.
We would like to remember mum as she used to be – Nanny Crumble to her grandsons Glen and Alex (every pudding was a crumble of sorts) and later Nanny Pontipine to her great grandchildren Charlotte and James (after the tiny people from In the Night Garden). She was well known for writing “little lists” which were far from little, and often a source of amusement to the rest of the family. Shopping often had to be deciphered - “coggetts” being courgettes, “carburettor” ciabatta bread and so on. When she and Aunt Joyce in Australia wrote to each other we joked they had their own special code – bad spelling, little or no punctuation and usually in the wrong place. There were mum’s famous muddly quotes which have now become part of the family vocabulary: Gok Wan has been renamed “Dr Gonk”, the Kindle is the “tringle”, mobile phones “the Facebooks”, Google Home is the “oooh goggle” and online shopping will forever be known as “line ons” using the “flap top”. But as well as these funny foibles, mum will be as much remembered for her kindness - always worrying about others and fretting about missing birthdays - her generosity to everyone plus the charities she supported, as well as her bravery in fighting the ailments that old age brought. Of these the most debilitating by far was the chronic painful arthritis that truly crippled her and impacted greatly on her mobility and her mental health. It is for this reason that we have chosen to support the charity “versusarthritis”.
Mum will definitely get the memorial she so deserves at a later date when we can all meet up again. Meanwhile please use this space to share memories, photos, light a candle or make a donation.
