In loving memory of Susan Mary Gordon who sadly passed away on 12th April 2020
Sue was born on 28th July 1959 in Farnborough, South London to her loving parents Mary & Colin Avis & became a big sister to Keith Avis a few years later. Sue grew up in Sydenham, South London and went to Alexandra Infants & Junior school then Coopers School. Sue had a happy childhood full of lots of happy memories made with her family & friends who lived nearby.
As a young adult Sue was Akela at 10th Penge Scout Group and ran a successful Cub Pack that enjoyed camping trips. It was through working at Scouting magazine she met her husband Alan Gordon. Sue & Alan married on 1st August 1981 at Holy Trinity Church in Beckenham.
In December 1983 Sue & Alan became parents for the first time when their daughter Helen was born. They had another daughter Lindsay 3 years later. Sue loved being a mum, she was so proud of both Helen & Lindsay's achievements, whether it was competing in dance competitions or seeing her daughters graduate from university and become a teacher and a community learning disabilities nurse.
As a family Sue, Alan, Helen & Lindsay enjoyed many holidays together. They returned to Kos, Greece nearly every year and went away with good friends the Ball family. They also enjoyed Florida, Mexico and many other destinations. After the girls grew up, Sue & Alan loved their trips to Turkey & Egypt together.
In September 2016 Sue's dream of becoming a Nan came true when Helen gave birth to Sue's grandson Barney. Sadly, Sue's beloved husband Alan passed away just a little more than a week after Barney was born. Although this was an incredibly painful time for Sue, she found joy and comfort in being a doting & adoring Nan to Barney and looked forward to visits and daily video calls.
In March 2017 Sue started to work for a local charity called We Are Beams, in the direct payments team. The charity support disabled children & their families in Kent. Sue was incredibly proud to be part of the team, and fit in instantly with her colleagues, for whom she always had a kind word and a warm smile for. We Are Beams held a special place in her heart.
Sue loved her family more than anything, and has given them wonderful memories. She was also a football fan, and a lifelong supporter of Crystal Palace FC & held a season ticket for many years in Lower Holmesdale, and went to Wembley on a number of occasions. She was also talented with a crochet hook, and made blankets, scarves & baby clothes for family & friends.
Sue was kind, caring, clever & had a fantastic sense of humour and will be missed by all of us. She was a wonderful & much loved Mum, Nan, Daughter, Sister, Aunt & Friend.
Sue was taken in to Darent Valley Hospital on 5th April 2020 and passed away a week later on 12th April in ITU due to covid-19 infection, which came as a shock to all the family.
Sue's funeral will be on 13th May 2020 at 4pm at Thames View Crematorium. Due to lockdown restrictions numbers attending in person will be strictly limited. There will be a webcast link available.
Instead of flowers we would be grateful for donations to We Are Beams in Sue's memory.
Lots of Love,
Lindsay, Helen, Barney, Luke & Pete
