In loving memory of Bob Richards who sadly passed away on 11th April 2020

Bobby was born in Virginia, USA and moved frequently in his younger years due to his dads job in the Marines. He considered ‘home’ being North Carolina, where many of his loving family still reside. He leaves behind two brothers- Chuck and Steve and three sisters- Lorraine, Linda and Bonnie. At this time, the distance feels greater but Bobby was grateful for the internet and loved keeping in touch with his family- the FaceTime calls and conversational emails meant a lot.

He kept his southern accent despite living in England for all of these years and this was part of his charm! His favourite things in life all triggered fond memories of being ‘back home’ - hotdogs, baseball, Big cold drinks with stacks of ice to name a few.

He met his sweetheart Rosanna in Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire back in the 1970’s. They married in 1977 and shared 42, nearly 43 years of marriage. They have four children together - Lisa, Kari, Jodi and Jaryd. Despite a spate of illness, he managed to attend all of his children’s weddings and he felt so thankful to be part of these occasions. Bob and Rosanna share five grandchildren- Laila, Matteo, Mila, Gracie and Jamie. Their sixth grandchild is due in June.

As a daddy, he was our hero. He encouraged us to do our best, he showed us how important it was to provide for yourself by being an absolute grafter throughout his life, and wanted us all to pursue worthwhile careers. He bought excitement, noise, a huge amount of laughter and most importantly, the best bear hugs on the planet!

His grandchildren adored him and on many occasions referred to him as ‘the best Grampy’ - but he liked to call himself ‘Grumpy’! He was controversial in his thoughts, often claiming that he was concerned his grandchildren were being fed too many unnecessary fruit and vegetables- he countered that by ensuring they had plenty of secret visits to McDonalds! He enjoyed walking his grandchildren to school, watching them play football, discussing maths problems with them, doing the dishes while holding them one handed, under arm and cuddling up to them. They in turn, loved his quirky ways, his tickles and bear hugs.

Bobby was a sports fan. He loved playing and watching golf, watching football (avidly supporting USA every World Cup and trying to convince his grandchildren that they should support USA too!), playing baseball in his younger years and watching it as he grew older - we like to think he’s up there now somewhere ‘hitting balls’ with his younger brother Billy.

Bob spent most of his time in England, living in Sawtry. This is where his children grew up and where he set up ‘Carolina Bobs’, a car garage well known throughout the village. It was a sad day when he had to sell the business due to illness. He was touched to receive so many words of thanks back then, so we know he would have been overwhelmed by all of the kind words and memories people have shared with us since his passing.

We have set up a fundraising page to honour Bob. He was a generous man throughout his life, and we hope to be able to give a generous donation in his memory:

There are two kinds of good men in this world, a gentleman & a gentle man, Bob was both of those.
From the moment you met him you liked him, his genuine interest in you, along with his dry sense of humour which was usually accompanied by that cheeky little grin meant there was nothing not to like.
He wasn’t just a good brother in law, but he was a good friend, a great dad & grampy.
He is going to be missed by so many people.
God bless Bob...xx

It is with great sadness and yet great hope that we add our respects to this book. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and especially to Bob's daughter Lisa who is married to one of our daughters' ex-High School teachers. Bob was one of the nicest, most sincere people we know. His most evident gift was Encouragement, always giving a willing listening ear to those who needed to share, and stepping forward to give praise and thanks whenever he felt moved to do so. He will be sorely missed by our family and the Congregation at Alconbury Independent Baptist Church. Our great joy is that Bob is in the arms of His Saviour and is enjoying eternal peace without suffering. Until we meet again!!

From the moment you first met Bob, you knew that he was genuinely interested in you, your family and circumstances. “How you doin’ buddy” was his opening line and Bob really wanted to know. You always felt valued by Bob and however hard you might try, it was practically impossible to get him to tell you about himself. Even when I saw him not so long ago when he was becoming increasingly unwell, he never complained or spoke of himself.
Bob was always smartly casual with his signature pink shade of jumper, greeting you with a strong handshake and eye contact that showed a warm personality. Bob was often quiet in a crowd but became engaging and spoke easily in a one to one situation. My father was a man of few words in public, but when he & Bob met at occasional family gatherings they would talk easily and with genuine interest in each other’s situation.
I know Bob was a man with a deep Christian faith which as it deepened over the years made him the man he was – selfless with a real interest in and concern for others.

I wish I had the words to make things better for you all. Bob was one of those that you know was a one off, my memories are you living at bungalow in sawtry us swimming at the Duncan’s, Bob and red taking us on the base and I had my first ever Burger King . Your car was the first car I went in with seat belts , I thought you were rich because I know for a fact bob probably laughed at the cars dad had over the years . I grew up thinking Bob must be rich xx
He used to come and meet dad Thursdays for snooker and yes I also remember his lovely jumpers, never my dads cup of tea . Our dads relationship I think was something special something we may never know but looking on the outside in and the support your dad gave my dad was amazing x Carolina Bob you’ll be missed x lots of love to everyone x
