A loving father and doting grandfather who always showed a keen interest in his family, dad died on 2 April 2020 aged 99, only 10 weeks before his 100th birthday. Having being taken ill at Christmas dad spent the new year in hospitals at Lincoln, Louth, Grimsby and Gainsborough. Sadly, he died within a day of being sent to a care home to make way for covid-19 patients. He leaves three sons, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He joined the RAF at the outbreak of WW2 and after serving in the RAF Regiment throughout the Burma campaign ran a small business and taught art part-time before joining the sales department of a mining and engineering firm. There he embraced the opportunities provided by the Common Market and travelled widely through Europe and beyond. Whilst Export Sales Manager, he and his team won a contract to supply equipment for the creation of the San Gotthard Tunnel and were given the Queen’s Award to Industry for services to exports.
In retirement he and mother moved from Sheffield to Lincoln where dad enjoyed pursuing his lifelong interests in art and gardening. He continued landscape painting until a few years ago, when his deteriorating eyesight finally prevented him. Always well-informed and abreast of current affairs he continued the learning process throughout retirement. Interests in archaeology, archaeological finds, local history and sport came to the fore as deteriorating eyesight made it difficult for him to paint and draw.
Independent to the last, he looked after himself throughout the 24 years following the death of his wife Dorothy and greeted the problems he endured due to diabetes in the last 22 years of his life with fortitude and stoicism. He set an example to us all and will be remembered with love and affection
