The funeral and reception are still going ahead as planned. We now have a number of bottles of hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and antibacterial spray that everyone can make use of at the crematorium and hotel.

If you have gloves, please bring these with you as you may feel more secure wearing them to protect your hands. Obviously, there are toilet facilities at the crematorium and hotel with handwashing facilities.

If you are in the 'at risk' category identified by the Government and NHS, please consider your own safety. However, despite Mum, Christopher and myself being in that category ourselves, we will still be there and have the same concerns as all of you do.

We are currently looking into ways to provide those who can't attend with either a recording or transcript of the funeral service and we will have copies of the Order Of Service that we can hopefully send out. We are also considering holding a Memorial get together when all this insanity has died down and it's safe for everyone to get together again. We will keep you all posted as best we can.

Thanks
Rowena.

In loving memory of John Ernest William Clarke who sadly passed away on 23rd February 2020.

A dear husband, brother, father and grandfather, he will be sorely missed by us all. Only now do we realise just how many lives he touched and how many people loved him.

The family would be grateful if you could let them know if you will be attending the reception at The Abbey Hotel, The Broadway, Minster, Sheerness, Kent ME12 2DA following the funeral service. Should anyone wish to stay overnight, the Abbey Hotel are offering a 10% discount on room prices to those attending John's funeral (please mention John Clarke's funeral when booking).

Feel free to add your comments, memories and/or photos to this page. We'd love to see them.

Valerie, Rowena and Christopher. x

I first met John in September 1965, when I joined the Fire Brigade as a clerical officer. Even though he sent me off to Westminster College to do 'A' levels on day release we subsequently became good friends and had great nights at the Temple Bar pub with other colleagues listening to Roger and the group. John's favourite song was 'White Cliffs' (Righteous Brothers version).
John also displayed his expertise in controlling a rather large horse called 'Trigger' when we holidayed in North Devon for a week staying on a farm. I remember him hanging onto the horses neck on return to the stables. He managed to stay on Trigger - a great holiday.
A kind and gentle man John will be sadly missed, especially his reminiscences about his time in the Establishments Section of the Fire Brigade. Cheers John.

I would just like to thank everyone who has uploaded pictures, sent messages, cards and made donations. It is especially wonderful to see all the photos of Dad in his youth and with all the good friends he kept in touch with over the years. Many of you have become like family.

Please keep the memories coming - I know they are a comfort to Mum particularly.

Thank you all
Lots of love

  • How wonderful to see these old photos again. John always spoke with great warmth and good humour about those times. You were going on 'lads holidays' long before they were the norm and, if the stories he told were anywhere near true, I think you could all teach today's youngsters something about having good fun!
