In loving memory of Robert John Richmond who sadly passed away on 9th January 2020

I have only just learnt about this and it came as a real shock, although it is a very long time since we last were in touch. I was born in Nottingham in the same year as Robert and I knew him very well when we were both juniors and making our way up the rankings in competing West Bridgford schools and chess clubs. He was a ferocious competitor (as was his brother). We played each other a number of times. Even at that early stage, he was an excellent player. Much more importantly, he was a really decent guy. We lost touch when I left Nottingham in 1984. What a tragic loss, way too soon.

I knew Robert in the early 1970s when he and his brother, Allan, were formidable leading lights of the Notts chess community, initially at junior level but soon at senior level also, winning multiple county championship titles at all age levels. He contributed hugely to chess both locally and nationally. I was saddened to hear of Robert’s passing and offer condolences from myself and my brother, Kevin, to Allan, family and friends.

I knew Robert in the early 1970s when he and his brother, Allan, were formidable leading lights in the Notts chess community, initially at junior level but soon at senior level also, winning multiple county titles at different age levels. Over the last four decades he contributed hugely to chess both locally and nationally. I was saddened to hear of his passing, and on behalf of myself and my brother, Kevin, offer my sincere condolences to Allan, family and friends.
