In loving memory of John David Stone, beloved Father and Grandfather, who sadly passed away aged 83 on January 20th.

John lived his life in Richmond Upon Thames. Born in Kew in 1936, he was educated locally, worked as a Typesetter in Richmond and lived with his wife Brenda and their two daughters, Kathy and Jackie, in Whitton.

Between 1957 and 1959, John completed his National Service in Cyprus and, in the years after, could often be found regaling friends and family members alike with photos and stories from his time served in the RAF. It was after his return from Cyprus that John met Brenda at a local Cub’s swimming gala in 1960. The two were married in September 1961 and had the great fortune to celebrate 57 happy years together.

Alongside his interest in Military history, John and Brenda also had a shared passion for both local and family history – two topics which often overlapped due to their families long-standing presence in the area. John could often be found pouring over his photo albums or updating the Stone and Mason family trees as old relatives were discovered and new ones were born.

John was also an active member of his local community, taking on the role of Church Warden at St. Philips and St. James’ church for five years and becoming a dedicated member of the local Conservative Party. He was also partial to a game of badminton and could often be found playing a match with his friends on a Tuesday evening.

After his retirement, John, a devoted family man, was once again able to spend more time with those he loved the most. The birth of his three granddaughters, Charlotte, Bethany and Elli, in the 1990’s certainly kept him and Brenda busy for the following decades and saw their house once again filled with the hustle and bustle of family life.

The garden at Bryanston Avenue was his pride a joy and John will be dearly missed by his family, friends and every neighbourhood cat and bird who flocked there and was looked after by John during the half a century the Stone family lived in the house.

Whilst the last few years of his life were not without sadness, until the very end, John approached every new challenge he and Brenda faced with a smile, a joke and positive outlook.

A service will be held in John’s memory on Wednesday February 19th at 12.20. John's family would like it if you could please wear Blue, Black or Green.

John and Carolyn worked with Brenda before any of us were married and we forged a life long friendship with Brenda & John. We are so sorry to have lost both our dearest friends who were devoted to each other and who we will dearly miss.

John was our lifelong friend for eighty years, we played together as little ones, attended the same schools and all joined the RAF for National Service although going off in different directions during adulthood. Our friendship remained firm through the years and he leaves a big gap in our lives but so many very happy memories. Rest in peace John you were a smashing chap and true friend.
