Dawn was adopted in to the Martin family very shortly after her birth in 1948. She was raised by her mother after the untimely passing of her father in the very early years of her life. At a young age she developed a love of horses that would stay with her for the rest of her life and would go on to play a part in meeting her husband John.
Dawn grew up in St Albans where her mother who was a nurse ran a small care home. Working with her mother in the home sowed the seed for wanting to care for people.
In 1966 Dawn began her nursing career at Queen Marys Hospital for Children, a career that go on to span over four decades and encounter various disciplines of nursing.
In 1978 Dawn gave birth to Justin and in her stoic fashion would proclaim how quickly she had returned to work. Later in 2010 and again in 2014 Dawn became a grandmother when life was at a little more sedate pace.
At Dawns core was a desire to help and to care for people, sometimes it was the “medicine that she felt they needed and not the medicine they wanted” that came across and I think that there are a good few people in the room today who have experienced the blunt end of Dawns desire to help.
Proud, obstinate, opinionated, stubborn,
Daughter, wife, mother, grandmother
Nurse, archivist and pet lover.
Dawns Late Husband was a lover of poetry and amongst Dawns personal item she had this poem
Walk a little slower.
"Walk a little slower, Daddy!" said a little child so small.
"I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall.
Sometimes your steps are very fast, sometimes they're hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy, for you are leading me.
Someday when I'm all grown up, you're what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child who'll want to follow me.
And I would want to lead just right, and know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy, for I must follow you!!"
