In loving memory of Muriel Anne Kathleen Rowland who sadly passed away on 20th December 2019.

Muriel of Rowland Brothers funeral directors of Croydon, celebrated her 102nd Birthday in Oct 2019 and had been working at Rowland Brothers since 1937. Muriel ran the company, to help her husband Arthur and his brother Jim (Uncle Jim), when the brothers were stationed in Jerusalem and the Normandy beaches during WWII.

Muriel provided the foundation for the development of Rowland Brothers from a single office into a large head office, 6 branch offices, a highly regarded international business and a funeral planning company.

She was known was ‘mum’ to the 75 staff at Rowland Brothers and was involved in most areas of the company but finally retired in 2018 age 100 yrs. Muriel was always the first person to arrive at Rowland Brothers - she used to take the bus – but when she turned 99 she finally agreed to being chauffeured to work at 7.30am. Muriel was one of the first people into to work and ensured the offices were open to the public at 8am.

Muriel along with ‘Uncle Jim’ attended virtually every NAFD conference between 1977 and 1990 and the two became well known figures throughout the industry. Muriel put her eternal youth down to hard work and being with her family and the occasional sherry.

Mum is survived by her four children Tony, David Bob and Jacki, 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great grandchildren.

Muriel will be sadly missed by her sons Tony, David and Bob and her loving daughter Jacki.

What a life well lived and what great memories you must have of 'Mum'. We all remember her from when we first started in the profession as teenagers. What a lovely lady who will be sadly missed by so many. The Directors of Lodge Brothers

I always admired Grannie, she was never without a smile and an absolute workhorse to the very last day. She was never ill and told me that she never drinks water - only tea and a sherry in the evening and always creamed her feet at night to keep them soft. I love that about her she also loved to look out at the garden when she sat in her chair and watched the seasons changing and the birds coming and going. I think of you and can still see your beautiful smile.
