The family wish to announce the sad passing of Eileen Barrett, devoted wife to Stan and loving mother to her two children David and John. She was a proud Grandma to Helen, Mark, Philip, Lindsey and Paul and loved to hear of their achievements and progress in life. She was also a Great Grandma to no fewer than ten growing young people: - Amy, Lisa, Holly, Dexter, Ben, Fraser, Charlie, Theo, Joseph and Jack. She loved to hear of their development and various exploits, scrapes and successes. She will be greatly missed.

Mum continued to live life to the full until the last four weeks of her life. She really looked forward to going to Orchard House, their day care centre. But most of all she loved going to Leeds. At least once (and often several times) each week, when she and Stan would jump on the Coastliner bus - using their treasured bus passes- and make the three hour journey (each way) to Leeds. They got to know the regulars - the man that read comics, the two ladies who chatted all the way etc. Once there they followed the same circuit, taking in the coffee shop (“he always saw us coming and had our drinks ready”) and on to Greggs for a sandwich - possibly buying their favourite ginger biscuits from an outdoor market stall. Then back to Scarborough with a meat pie, again bought from the market, for tea.

Mum fell ill and was hospitalised as she was struggling to eat and drink. She was cared for on Chestnut Ward at Scarborough Hospital by very kind staff there. As things progressed she received a cocktail of medicines to help but which caused her to sleep. The end came four weeks after she was admitted and she simply slipped away peacefully from a deep sleep. Our thanks go to the nursing staff who were kind to not only Mum but to us, the wider family.

The funeral will be held at Scarborough Crematorium at 1200 noon on Thursday 2 January 2020. All who knew her would be most welcome to attend to pay their last respects. No flowers please, though donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be welcome (these can be made through the Just Giving link on this site)

June, Thank-you. I am sorry but I am unaware if you are related to my late mum. You clearly both share an unusual maiden name. You may be interested to know that mum and her dad had lived in Nelson. Mum's dad Harold had worked for the local authority running the open air swimming pool at Marsden Park there before moving to West Yorkshire for a new job.

Aww gonna miss you loads Grandma. All those hours of crafting and sewing together we used to do back in the days. Garstang Agricultural show, Blackpool tower, Blackburn bomb scare!! Just a few things that spring to mind. Wine Wednesdays at our house every week with Grandad Stan once you’d moved to Scarborough. Great times!! Lindsey xxx

One of our regular outings just a few weeks back to Irton Garden Centre for Sunday lunch. The Christmas decorations were always fascinating to mum - not quite so for dad...

Eileen fought the good fight in her battle with dementia and motor neurone disease. She fought with courage and dignity and never once complained. She was a strong, brave soldier who retained her sense of humour to the end.
I admired her very much.

So many memories of Grandma....from being very young...feeding tortoises, Speedy & Roadrunner, cucumber and tomatoes, the 'scary' Jolly Green Giant tea towel in the kitchen and Grandma getting her first microwave and defrosting me slice after slice of bread for novelty value, rather than hunger!
I always admired Grandmas ability to 'craft' and loved going with her to craft fairs or honey stalls to help sell things.
At one point I lived with Grandma and Grandad for a couple of weeks, when I had a job nearby, Grandma cooked up a storm for me every night and I really enjoyed their company. Grandmas jam pasties were legendary.

Rest in peace Grandma...I'll miss you.

Well Mum
Hard to think that right up to you being admitted to hospital you and my Dad were going to Leeds on the bus.
You two had a happy life. You were devoted to each other and were clearly in love right to the end. Indeed ,as the years progressed and dementia took hold, your strengths offset Dads weaknesses and likewise Dads strengths neatly fitted areas you struggled with. A perfect match.
You both enjoyed a good social life. Dads Masonic membership brought two trips to the USA, organised by American Masons. You welcomed them back to your home Yorkshire for a British holiday - hosted by you and fellow Masons from Dads lodge in Beverley.
Sticking with the holiday theme, yours was I guess the first generation to take the opportunity of relatively cheap flights and holidays. These included several trips to Malaysia which you both enjoyed so much that you returned several times.
Your time in hospital, four weeks, was made as comfortable as possible. The last two weeks saw increased medicines which caused you to sleep. It was from a deep sleep that you simply slipped away, painlessly. I know that you will be in Heaven and looking down on us now, having been reunited with your Mum and Dad and doubtless many other friends and relatives.
You’ll be concerned about Dad but, whilst he’s lost without you, he’s being very well looked after.
I will miss you.
Love
David

I have a lot of fond memories of Grandma, with the over riding theme being always doing lots of things that made her happy. Selling honey, going to craft fairs, crochet, tatting, travelling aboard as often as possible, attending the brass band concerts - I think she had a very fulfilling, creative life. She loved her family and was always so happy when a new baby arrived - getting to hold of them for the first time. She’ll be missed by all of us. Rest in peace Grandma x

My Mum's swallowing difficulties finally became too much for her. After just over 4 weeks of kind support from the staff on Chestnut Ward she passed away peacefully in hospital on Monday the 16th December.
We had hoped that Mum and Dad could have moved together to the Masonic run Connaught Court Care Home in York. Dad had always asked to go to a Masonic home if one was needed. Sadly time ran out and that ambition proved impossible.
Dad has found events quite confusing but nevertheless still chose to move to Connaught Court as planned. It really is a lovely place and we are optimistic that he can find contentment there.
We suspect that attending Mum’s funeral might trouble Dad’s confused mind too much so he might not be with us then, but we shall judge that closer to the time.
