In loving memory of Bakhtawar Singh Chahal who sadly passed away on 17th September 2019.

Bakhtawar Singh was born in in Punjab, India in 1927. His family realised the importance of education and he was encouraged to study - excelling in mathematics! In the 1950's he marrried Gurmit Kaur and had 2 children in India, Pritpal and Paramjit. Again with the support of his family he was encouraged to go to England for more work opportunities, and left with a desire to return to India. However a few years later, he was joined by his wife and children who settled in Hyson Green, Nottingham along with other Indian families. Two further children, Dilawar (Bob) and Drinder were born. Sadly Paramjit died at the age of 10 after a prolonged illness during which Bakhtawar commuted every day to Sheffield to visit his son in hospital.

After a series of jobs he settled into being a taxi-driver. He also sent financial support to his family in India who benefitted greatly, particularly in developing their farms.

He continued to promote the value of education and actively participated in his childrens' (successful) careers and this inspirational attitude was passed onto his grandchildren. He also supported other members of the community and many are grateful for his active involvement in their lives. Over the last 5 years, with the support of his family, he looked after Gurmit who has been enduring illness with dementia.

From October last year to March this year, he was able to fulfil his ambition of going to stay with his brother in India and visit his childhood friends, places and family. After a short illness, he passed peacefully in his sleep.
