In loving memory of Ute Bass who passed away on 14th August 2019 aged 68 Years. She was much loved and will be sadly missed by her husband Jim and all her family and friends.
Ute was born in Westerstede in Germany on 17th July 1951. She lived with her family in a small farming village called Juhrdenerfeld, where her father was the village school teacher. In 1962 the family moved to Oldenburg, where Ute attended the local Grammar school. In 1971 Ute gained her A Levels and decided to go to Hamburg University, where she studied English, Geography and Education. In 1974 she met Jim Bass at a Disco in the student hostel.
In 1975 she studied American Literature at the University of Texas. She then moved back to Hamburg and in 1977 moved into a flat with Jim Bass. In the same year she gained her M.A. in English, Geography and Education. In 1979 she gained her second state degree and worked in a Grammar school in Hamburg. In 1981 she married Jim Bass.
In 1985 they moved to England, with the idea of starting a family.
Ute worked for 10 years at the German Institute in London. During this period she underwent infertility treatment and was expecting twins when she miscarried in the 22nd week.
They then tried to adopt but were told that they were too middle class.
She then taught German at John Ruskin 6th Form College in Croydon from 1994 until 2000.
She afterwards taught A Level German at Guildford College and then Basic Skills, ending her career in 2012 at Merrist Wood College.
In her retirement she travelled extensively to such countries as China, India, U.S.A., Canada & New Zealand.
Between 2016 and 2018 she cared for her sisters , who had cancer and also a sister, who suffered a stroke.
In 2018 after the deaths of the 2 sisters with cancer, she was diagnosed with small bowel cancer. This she fought for 15 months until her death.
