In loving memory of Betty Hughes who sadly passed away on 18th July 2019.

Betty was the daughter of Charlie and Teresa. Also young sister to Hugh and older sister to Anne, Cecilia and Charles all brought up in Greenock.

Witnessing an accident at an early age seemed to bring on epilepsy. Despite her condition Betty still managed to hold down a job in Aulds the bakery.

Epilepsy affected most of Betty’s life but had the full help and support from family, Dr Grey an epilepsy specialist and the epilepsy association.

It was events held at an epilepsy association event that she met her husband to be John Hughes and on 27th June 1974 got married at St. Laurence’s Church and both moved to Glasgow to set up family home.

On 2nd March 1976 their only son Michael Hughes was born and Betty chosen to give up work and concentrate in bringing up Michael.

There were hard times ahead with the seizures Betty had and also coping from everyday life due to the epilepsy.

However Betty never gave up and became very head strong. There became a habit with Betty in that she would make a firm decision on something but decided none the less to get the advice of family and friends and once received she would settle on the advice that matched her already made up decision :).

Betty found living away from the family in Greenock hard but became great friends with Ronnie and Sandra Barr who gave great support.

In the year 2000 Betty had a life changing operation which meant Betty stopped having seizures and had a new lease of life. This meant Betty decided to give back to the help and support from Epilepsy association and became a volunteer to befriend people going through similar things she had been going through.

Betty had continued to do this for many years to come and during this period she became friends with Agnes and Chandra and became best friends with Connie and Rose who she loved dearly.

Throughout her life Betty loved her bingo and come rain or shine would travel to meet up with people and play hoping to win big. Betty more often than not tended not to win big but that wasn’t important, it was more the getting out and being with people that she loved.

Betty faithfully went to see her dad Charles and the rest of her family each and every Monday as well as attending mass with her friend Connie at St Alphonsus.
Betty also loved to go out shopping with Connie and the house became full of items that she had bought just in case which ended up never being used :).

In 2014 Betty had another life changing event in being diagnosed with Bowel cancer and subsequently had an operation along with chemotherapy treatment to try and stop cancer cells spreading to other parts of body. In 2015 unfortunately it was discovered Betty had developed secondary lung cancer and had to undergo further treatment.

In the early stages of receiving the further treatment Betty had remained positive and upbeat still ensuring she went shopping, going to the bingo, mass and seeing her dad and family even after receiving chemotherapy on the same day.
However on 18th July 2019 Betty lost her battle and passed away peacefully at The Marie Curie Hospice in Barlornock.

The family would like to thank all Betty’s friends, extended family ass well as The Epilepsy Association for the help and continued support. The family would also like to thank The Beatson medical staff and Glasgow home care.

A special thank you to Marie Curie for all the help, support and work to help Betty have the best quality of life she could have right up to the end.
