In loving memory of Brenda Densham who sadly passed away on 8th June 2019 MUM BRENDA DENSHAM JUNE 2019
My mum has just died of Alzheimer’s disease.
She still greeted me every time I saw her, with that familiar, warm, beaming smile and I searched her eyes for a hint of recognition, embracing her tightly. Her arms staying firmly down by her side.
She didn’t remember how to hug me back.
When I was growing up, mum treated my sister and I like little princesses, providing us with an abundance of endless love, encouraging us to be the best versions of ourselves.
She would protect us from the hardships of life, acting as a shield so that we maintained our innocence and playfulness.
Endless conversations all seemed like a lifetime ago. people stopped coming to see mum and she spent her time sitting quietly. We spent our days happy and strong in the face of adversity, learning to appreciate the small things in life - like when she remembered my name on the rare occasion.
There were moments that brought us joy. When I looked into her eyes, I felt that she could still remember, remember that I was her daughter.
She eventually forgot us. But we will never forget her. Our mum. Brenda.....
I did Memory Walk every year with my family. and felt such pride in making a small contribution to what needs to be such a big change in how we view dementia and how the government treats dementia.
