In loving memory of John Toogood who sadly passed away on 27th March 2019.

Father; brother; son; Theatre General Manager; jazz fanatic; published author; lively dancer; talented carpenter; snazzy dresser; bingo caller; keen gardener; grasstrack & motorcycle racing fan; a man with a contagious laugh and trademark hat who lived life to the full.

However you knew our beloved and much admired dad John, we'd like to invite you to celebrate his life with us on Friday 26th April 2019, 13:00, St Mary Magdalene Church, Bailgate, Lincoln. Followed by a reception at the Tower Hotel, 14:00 - 17:00. All are welcome.

No flowers by request. But if you would like to make a donation to Cancer Research in John's name, you can find the details on this page.

Rachel Toogood donated £275 in memory of John

This donation is the money collected at Dad's funeral from those who attended, so thank you everyone who donated - we are so pleased that we have managed to raise so much. Dad would be touched.

Andy Stage Management Association donated in memory of John

A respected Theatre Company Manager and General Manager, mostly in the West End and on Number One tours, John was also a stalwart of SMA for many years and our Board Chair from 1984, serving in that capacity or as a Board Director until his retirement in 2001. John was always a great advocate and supporter of SMA and the craft of Company and stage management; his charm, wit, and storytelling kept us all entertained when we met at various events; he will be sadly missed here at SMA and by many colleagues in the industry.

So sad to lose you Tooey. I’ve known you for so long, and all that time you have been such a great support for me. You’ve been with me through two weddings, first as Best Man and then as a loyal friend. There are so many times I will remember. Thank you for everything, Tooey. GP

  • My friendship with John 'Old Timer ' Toogood was through our common interest in grass track history and we only met up face to face at some of the bigger grass track meetings with phone calls being our main way of answering the many questions that used to pop up regarding missing results and former meetings / riders etc. I will miss our chats as well as seeing the great man in person. R.I.P. John it was great fun while it lasted.

  • Outside our shared digs in Canning Street, Liverpool 8 ,renamed the legendary '13 Club' where unsuspecting but not unwilling guests were entertained after the other clubs closed for the night, Nuff said! Nice one Toosie, miss it all, especially you.

John I’ll remember you in your YSL suit over dinner and in your leather “clubbin” hat dancing the night away. I’m so lucky to have got to know you. I’d say RIP but I doubt that you’re resting or peaceful even now. X

1969 - ‘The Boss’. Liverpool Playhouse. During the last programme of the season - Music Hall - John decided that the SM team needed to be occupied in a useful manner & maintain the ‘Haystack’ above the stage. It was a bit of a frolic 😊 but it got done!

  • Those were also 'my' Toosie days. Me at the ramshackle Everyman, he lording it at the esteemed Playhouse and both of us sharing a multi bed sit house in the infamous Canning Street, Liverpool 8. What crazy heady days! What fun and happiness. What dreams we all had-most of them requited, and proud to be of service and part of the business. We were a force around the Clubs in 1969-70 and Toosie always danced me off the floor with the ladies....and ever since!

I have just come across this news with great sadness. John was such a great friend and supporter of GRAB - Grantham's Big Band. I remember he suggested we play Ted Heath's arrangement of the Lincolnshire Poacher on Lincolnshire day - our first big gig. He gave us several fantastic write-ups and hardly missed one of our gigs, sadly being unable to come more recently because of his illness. It was a privilege to know him. Goodbye Mister Bojangles. Wherever you are, do the old soft shoe shuffle when we play again.
