Derek John Middleton (27 Jun 1935 - 3 Apr 2019)
In loving memory of Derek John Middleton who sadly passed away on 3rd April 2019.
A service to celebrate his life will take place at the Cambridge Crematorium, East Chapel on Wednesday 17th April 2019 at 12:30pm. Following the service the family would like to invite everyone back to Dad’s bungalow in Little Stukeley postcode PE28 4BD, for refreshments and to share your memories.
Dad was born on the 27th June 1935 in Godmanchester and spent all of his early life living and growing up in the family home in Little Stukeley. In 1953 Dad signed up and joined the Royal Air Force heading up to the RAF training depot at West Kirby on the Wirral. During his initial basic training Dad had the honour of providing the guard along the route used by the royal cortège for HM the Queens wedding.
On completion of his basic training as an RAF supplier Dad was posted just a short distance to Liverpool where he worked in the Liver building. It was during this time he met mum; Hilary and they were married in 1955. His RAF career took him and the family all over the world with tours in Singapore, Aden and Cyprus. In addition to these tours Dad also travelled to Christmas Island as part of the UKs nuclear testing detachment. During his career he also visited many countries throughout the world. In the early 70s Dad was posted to Cyprus to join the NEAF MAMS team, a job he always talks about as being the best during his RAF career. Dad also had numerous tours in the U.K. and it was during this time in the late 60s that he built the family home in the village of Little Stukeley.
On retirement from the RAF in 1978, Dad took up a job in the MOD civil service and completed his working life as the Station Warden at the American base at RAF Alconbury. Following retirement Dad immersed himself in village life and for many years was a prominent member of the parish council.
His wife Hilary passed away in early 2012 and following complications from a fall at home Dad passed away on the 3rd April 2019. He is survived by his children, John, Susan and Darrell.
