In loving memory of Ronald Smy who sadly passed away on 23rd March 2019.
Born in 1928 to a working class family in Bradford Yorkshire, Ronald was 1 of 10 children. After completing a poor education, on leaving school Ron went to work in a local mill as was the expectation of all his siblings. After working at the mill for a short time Ronald left to train as a Wickcliffe Preacher, driving round the UK pulling a caravan, and preaching at various places. After 4 years working in Belfast, he returned to England and married his wife in 1954, in Cambridgeshire. He then became Student Pastor at Bethel Baptist Church, Shipley for 7 years before accepting a call to become Minister at Scapegoat Hill. Following 6 years of ministry he moved to Wallingford, Oxfordshire and after 4 years moved to Wymondham in Norfolk. Following Wymondham he moved to Dagenham, Essex to become Senior Minister of the then Dagenham group. On leaving Dagenham he moved to Marlborough Baptist Church in South Devon where he stayed until retirement. On retiring he was housed by the Retired Baptist Ministers Housing Society in Braintree, Essex where he stayed until moving to Romford Essex. During his time at Romford both his and his wife's health deteriorated. It was decided that a move closer to his son in Dorset would be a good one, so in August 2009 he moved for the last time to Wimborne, where he lived for 10 years. In November 2018 he celebrated his 90th birthday, but shortly after, his health began to fail and at 3am on the morning of 23rd of March he passed away peacefully in Poole Hospital. We are grateful for his life and work, and now he is at peace.
Donations in memory of Ronald are for Baptist Missionary Society (cheques made payable to the B.M.S.) and Prostate Cancer, World Cancer Research Fund (cheques made payable to Mr D Davy). Cheques may be sent to Mr A L'Angellier-Smy, 215 Dorchester Road, Weymouth, Dorset, DT3 5EQ.
