So sorry to hear the sad news. Harvey was a lovely person. He was always willing to help out and would give you time if you had a question about anything. We hadn't seen him or the family for some years since we moved from Stilton but all our thoughts are with Heather and the family.

  • As a past Chairman and flyer with SkyLincs I concur Ann’s comments about Harvey’s commitment and dedication to the club. A valued member of both SkyLincs and Scouting. Many young people benefitted from his careful and conscientious participation. Rest in peace friend. Edward Sowells MBE

A tribute to Harvey Jeal
Harvey and I first met at Spitalgate Airfield Grantham when we brought young people (Scouts and students) Parascending. It didn't take long for us to become regulars flying with Lincolnshire Scout Parascending Club and eventually earning our own (personal) Parascending Wings working towards becoming instructors.
The challenge in the 1990s was to rebuild the Parascending Team into Sky Lincs. Harvey came into his own as he fixed a team identity with his tee-shirts, baseball caps and sweat shirts for which he is remembered by many ex-Sky Lincs members who have collections to this day!

Harvey took his time (he was sometimes slow to respond as he checked and double-checked equipment) but he ensured the safety of Scouts that parascended with us with his meticulous care. Harvey encouraged a group of young leaders to commit to season-long course at Luffenham Airfield developing our youth team who remember him with fondness and loyalty. We will all continue to remember Harvey's commitment and involvement encouraging participants to enjoy our exciting adventurous (and potentially dangerous) activity.

A lesson learned:.. at North Weald where we were welcomed by another Scout team under the leadership of Rusty. During pre-flight briefing on a sunny Sunday afternoon Harvey was told, "You will return to this take-off area after flying the circuit. Remember to turn into wind before the windsock pole. Don't look at the pole - turn into wind away from it...
In the last minute of the flight all Harvey recalled was the windsock pole - fixed on it and flew into it... the lesson learned? Never fix on where you don't want to be - look for where you want to go! We chortled about that memory last year when I visited Harvey at home.

In 1999, Harvey attended the Norfolk Scout Jamboree as a tow driver under training. In the huge space of Swanton Morley airfield he quickly honed his skills. Tow drivers carry a huge responsibility for the safety of novice flyers and he approached that responsibility with his usual care. As his Instructor, I took great satisfaction in signing him off to tow round canopies without supervision. His ongoing training to tow square canopies at that Camp did provide amusement. Early one hot, windless morning we set about towing a club member using the very long line. Far from easy in those conditions, I directed Harvey to go left... and right... and left again. After the Pilot released himself and we came to a halt in the farthest corner of the airfield, Harvey looked around in wonder and exclaimed, "How did I end up down here?"

I will remember the support and effort that Harvey put in year after year as we ran the Sky High weekend camp for groups from around the UK. Harvey appeared to help set up even when his factory had huge orders for tee-shirts being printed for customers. Sunday after the Scouts departed found him wielding the hosepipe and brush ensuring the loo-block was clean and spotless. Harvey was loyal and ever thoughtful. He is and will be sadly missed.
