In loving memory of Ellen Pendrey, who sadly passed away on 31st January 2019.
Ellen Pendrey nee Crowley, was born in Dunsfort, Midleton, Co Cork, on 17th December 1928. She came to Birmingham in 1950 to work on the trams. She met and married her husband Raymond in 1952 and had one son also called Raymond. She later went on to be a catering manager for Birmingham school meals until she retired.
She had a grandson Matthew who gave her the name Grandy. Eileen or Nellie as she was often also called, worshipped at the Rosary RC church in Parkfield Road, where she had many friends over the years. Fr Kelley was a regular visitor, and she enjoyed cleaning the church in later years.
She was a loving mother and Grandy to Matthew, and will be sadly missed. Please remember her in your prayers.

Ellen Pendrey was a remarkable woman who cared unconditionally for her family and friends. She had a burning desire to put all others before herself and was truly a Child of God.

She was, and still is, deeply loved by her family in Ireland, her late husband Raymond, her son Raymond, her daughter-in-law Carole and I. She had a wonderful circle of friends, including her late friends Betty and Diane, Tony, PJ and Father Kelley, to name just a few. All those who met her were touched by her sincerity and humility.

She was an active and longstanding member of Our Lady Of The Rosary Church and her devotion to the Church was demonstrated by her volunteering to clean the Church on Thursday mornings well into her 80s.

Her love was absolute and she was the perfect Grandparent. As a toddler, I named her Grandy and this name stuck for the next quarter of a century. My first childhood memories are of playing in the garden with Grandy. Whether it was football, cricket or even boules, she would always gladly give her time, until long after sunset.

During term time, Grandy would collect me from Infants School, where we would stare with incredulity at the ‘weed garden’ and count the seconds (and minutes) it took for the Daw End Lane traffic light to turn from red to green. Then during summer, Grandy would visit my parents, Sean the Wolfhound and I on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which meant more fun and games.

In her spare time, Grandy was a keen gardener and kept a majestic garden at her house in Fernbank Road. She was a wonderful cook and my Dad and I would always request either school pie, liver and bacon or steak and kidney pie. Ten out of ten, every time.

Grandy had an excellent moral compass, uncanny ability to deliver valuable advice and a quick wit. Our love grew stronger as the years flew by, as our conversations became more diverse and eclectic, sharing life stories, recipes and the joys (and woes) of being an Irish rugby fan.

Ellen Pendrey now rests in Heaven but will never be forgotten and will always remain in our hearts.

Ellen spent her whole life caring for others. As a young girl in Ireland she was sent to her grandparents’ home to care for them.
For a young lady, the life-changing journey from rural Ireland to big city Birmingham on her own shows how brave and strong she was.
She was dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church, her family in Ireland, her husband and son in England and, since his birth, to her grandson Matthew.
As part of her rich and enriching life she made many loyal and loving friends. Sadly.many have gone before her. She will remain forever in our thoughts and prayers.
