In loving memory of Dr Richard Winters, a true gentleman who sadly and unexpectedly passed away on 10th February 2019, peacefully in his sleep with his best friend and wife of 47 years Marjorie, by his side.
Those fortunate enough to know Richard will know how much he adored his family. He was immensely proud of his two daughters, Sharon and Sarah, boasting about them whenever he got the chance. An incredible father, always a constant in his girls’ lives. A gentle and kind man content with what he had. Richard felt incredibly blessed with his family and always made sure they knew it. Richard welcomed Douglas and Paul into his family and entrusted them with his precious girls.
He treasured the time spent with family and loved nothing more than hosting dinner at home, whipping up Italian dishes with recipes passed down from his grandmother, mother and aunties. He was a talented and ambitious cook and often surprised Marjorie with romantic meals.
Richard burst with pride when he became a grandfather to his grandson Ollie Orsi. An unbreakable bond was instantly formed between the pair and Richard cherished his days with Ollie. The duo would potter and prune for hours together in the garden before returning to the house for Grandpa Rick’s special french toast. Shortly before he passed away Richard was blessed with a grandaughter, Lucia Rose. He was euphoric, singing in Italian on the Main Street in Uddingston when he heard the good news. Although their time was too short, Lucia and Grandpa Rick bonded beautifully.
Time spent with Richard was always memorable. Richard had the ability to transport you into another world with his storytelling abilities. Richard was an avid reader with a vast knowledge of a whole host of subjects which he loved to share. You left a conversation with Richard knowing and wanting more. A great multitasker who enjoyed ‘a good cowboy’ whilst listening to his beloved Rangers on the radio.
Richard was the Headteacher of Milncroft Primary School in the East End of Glasgow until his retirement at the age of 47, due to Post Polio Syndrome. Richard’s faithful companion during this time was the family dog Toffee. Richard always had a love for animals and the family home was always full of cats who were happy to take a nap with Richard.
With a need to keep his mind active and with a passion for learning Richard returned to education as both a student and lecturer at Glasgow University. He loved his work there and took up his role with great passion. Richard always had a thirst for knowledge and continued his studying and research throughout his life.
Richard was extremely proud of his Italian roots, visiting Bologna several times having found his family there ten years ago. Richard slotted in seamlessly and impressed them with his flair for the language.
Richard lived his life with an inspiring and unshakeable bravery, living with the effects of Post Polio Syndrome. Richard refused to allow the illness to define him. He always had a positive attitude to life and wanted to live and learn forever, and believed that he would. The family have chosen to donate to the British Polio Fellowship in memory of their darling Richard.
Goodnight, God bless x x x
