These are the words that were spoken as a Eulogy to Siân at her Funeral 25/1/2019
Thank you to everyone for being here today to pay tribute to Siân . Losing a daughter, sister or grandchild is a family's worst nightmare and we, as a family, cannot put into words the grief that we are feeling. The love and support that we have received from all of our friends and family has helped significantly in getting us through this difficult time.
Jenny, Siân's little sister, has written:
Siany, gone but never forgotten, secrets still remain, memories will never go away. I’m thanking you for everything. I expect today, everything recently will finally become real, but I don’t ever want to let go of your hand, holding tight to have the confidence to continue life without you in it, my big sister by my side, but I’m afraid to let go… so I choose not to, but you can; our memories are cherished, so don’t worry about leaving us. so, sleep tight, I love you and may the angels lead you in xxx
Siân was quite a timid child with a phobia of men with beards which was a bit unfortunate as she had two loving grandfathers who supported facial hair. She spent a great deal of her early childhood outside, playing with her brother, sister, cousins and friends, mixing up mud pies with great abandon. Family holidays with the other cousins, in France, Wales and England were memories to be treasured along with times spent with her second family, the Davies's. She had a great love of animals especially pigs and her beloved cat, Patch.
Siân took up the double bass and piano at secondary school and although somewhat of a reluctant customer at first, grew to love playing, helped along by the support and encouragement of Mr Green and Jonty Nowell amongst others. Once a member of various ensembles she developed invaluable friendships with some wonderful young people who gave their support as Siân gave hers. Her bass is here today, roughly in the same place as it was when Siân played her last concert in December – next to her was Alex.
At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and admitted to hospital. We all found this difficult to cope with but she was proud that she was never admitted again due to this condition.
Teenage years are always difficult and she had many challenges and some dark days during these years. She did well at GCSE's but made some interesting choices for her A levels, the result of which left her in a bit of a quandary.
After her A levels she started to spend more time in Lincoln than at home, eventually moving in with her boyfriend Charlie. She applied to various apprenticeships and started to look at what University courses she might want to think about. Applying for various jobs in this “gap year” Siân found herself employed as an engraver with John Greed Jewellery. This was a job she could take pride in, making sure that the job was done to the best of her ability and trying desperately to ignore the bad spelling and incorrect grammar that many of the clients used. She was so proud to be able to buy her new phone and purchase, with her sister, a beautiful pair of earrings for her mother, a present we were still able to give on Christmas day even though Siân was not there.
Her friends have been so important to her and she did so enjoy going out with them. These are some words from one of them, the last person we know who saw Siân alive
“Siân has been an amazing friend to me over the past few years. More so over the past six months where she has regularly stolen food from my plate while having a drink at the pub!, let me then drive her home, which is normally the wrong way to my house and she often insulted my lovely checked shirts which I cannot understand.
However, most importantly, Siân has been there to support her friends and for me, has been a shoulder to cry on when I have things on my mind.”
Her brother Tom has chosen some words by Sam Carter:
“They say "the good die young"
No use in saying "what is done is done" because it's not enough
And when the night gives way
What will be will be
Every river flows into the sea, but it's never enough
And when the night gives way
It's like a brand new day”
We now have to say an impossible farewell to our beautiful, beautiful daughter Siânald from mooma and moopa we will always love you and be ever proud of you.
Requests for the Funeral
If you wish to attend there are a few requests:
Please wear something colourful. Siân had a true understanding of colours and texture. Her favourite colour was purple.
Learn the theme to "The Vicar of Dibley" as this will be the tune we use to sing The Lord is my Shepherd.
We request that there are just family flowers and that you instead, donate to Diabetes Uk. A link is on this memorial page to make it easy for you.
Lastly, we would like to thank you for the overwhelming number of cards, messages and help.
Best wishes,
Dave, Sara, Tom and Jenny
