On 6th January with his family beside him at home, Dougie aged 81 years of Silsden. Beloved husband of the late Rita, much loved dad, grandpa, great grandpa, father in law, brother, and a dear friend to many.

Janet Burgess wrote

It wasn't a shock we knew this would come,
So why do I feel so incredibly numb,
You were always there when I needed you so,
I never believed that one day you'd go,
So many people needed you there,
Helping and guiding with such love and care,
Building machines and mending TV's,
And picking me up when I skinned my knees,
With hands like a giant and compassion to match,
When life made me fall l was sure of your catch,
You taught me that family give me strength from within,
And to take what life throws at me straight on the chin,
You taught me so much I just hope in return,
That I also helped you to live and to learn,
My children are luckier than most by far,
They had the kindest most loving and funny Grandpa,
We had fun in the sun in OZ, New Zealand and Malta,
And your zest for life never did falter,
I know in my heart I could never have had,
A more loving and caring and wonderful Dad,
And I hope and I pray to the moon, stars and sun,
You are finally united up there with our mum,
I loved you so much of that there's no doubt,
And I know you'll be there when my time runs out,
You were my shining beam of light,
Goodbye, God bless and one final night, night.

I first met Dougie 30 years ago when I started "courting" his niece, Janice. If we had any problems with anything mechanical or electrical he was always there with his great knowledge. I remember fondly the times we spent together repairing my cars, helping him build his summer house and having a few drinks under the gazebos that he designed. You will be missed greatly R.I.P.

Uncle Douglas gave me a lot of time and help when I was an apprentice engineer and with different projects when I was younger
He was so talented in all he did
I will always remember how he gave encouragement to young people

Doug gave me my first job as a machine operator at J.W. Tait's nearly 50 years ago, and then we went on to become very good friends and workmates. We had many happy and eventful times, both in the pub and at work. Doug was always there when I needed him, repairing cars, diggers and working on the farm , but the biggest change in my life was when he advised me to drive a digger for L. W. Pickard. I then went on to become a manager for him and then started my own business. I have an awful lot to thank Doug for in my life, it's been a privilege to have known him and to be his friend over the years. Doug will be sadly missed by many, especially me.
Ken
