Max Matthews passed away on Christmas Day at the grand old age of nearly 92! Max taught at Vincent Thompson and St Luke’s High School from 1953 until he retired in the late 80’s but then returned as a supply teacher for many years.
He had fairly good health just difficult for the last three years. His son Guy, let Bob Brewer (former teacher at Vincent Thompson) know about Max and asked him to let staff and ex pupils know, hence Bob contacted me.
Max Matthew’s funeral is being held at the Crematorium in Exeter 1.30pm on Friday 25th January. All friends, ex staff and ex pupils are welcome to attend.
Max was an amazing teacher and inspirational to both staff and pupils. His main subject PE but he also taught Human Biology and some Geography lessons. He taught with reason and conviction plus had a sense of humour but his discipline was fair and immediate - he knew how to manage youngsters and their behaviour. A well respected member of staff who was inspirational to me and a role model when I started as a newly qualified teacher at Vincent Thompson.
Max qualified as a teacher in 1949 and continued until he retired. He taught cricket and was involved in organising Duke of Edinburgh Awards for pupils over many years. He also coached basket ball and football for Exeter and Devon Leagues.
