Mum. I will always remember you as the strong, capable and practical person you were. Generous with your time, selfless in your willingness to help others, compassionate and caring without being maudlin. I had so many good times in your company and I can look back on those and brighten my day when I’m feeling down. Even though your last few years were blighted by dementia we could still make each other smile, and you retained your sense of irreverence right to the end. You will always be alive in my memories, love you always. Stuart

Nana Sheila and I spent a lot of time together when I was young. After my mum went back to work, Nana spent a lot of time looking after me.
I remember when she used to pick me up from preschool at lunchtime, we’d walk home and usually have cheese on toast. I also remember the day I found out I wouldn’t be going home for lunch anymore and that I had to stay all day until the afternoon. This was a very sad day, one I’m still yet to recover from.
I always had a strong bond with Nana Sheila and I always admired her outlook on life. Once, I asked her what happens after we die. She looked up from the crime book she was reading and told me, “Nothing. You die and you’re gone. “ I’ve always found this strangely comforting...
She had a tremendous stoicism, but also an incredibly kind heart and huge capacity to care for others. Her sense of humour stayed with her till the very end and it’s the thing I remember most fondly when I think of her.
