I met John down the Cons Club about 40 years ago where he introduced me to one of the loves of his life - good vintage port, in fact port of any kind. He forgot to mention not to drink it as a chasers to pints of bass and after a Xmas session I gave up port for life.
In those days John was a retailer of fine furniture to the wannabes of Burton and he supplied me with my first dining table and chairs made of the best mahogany in the recency style. He did me a deal on the recommended retail price because John was an old style dealer and it was his astuteness and experienced business acumen that helped the Cons Club survive through some torrid financial times.
He dedicated over 20 years to the Club both as Steward , along with Shirley , as as bar raconteur with the keys to a safe full of Burton folklore of the seventies , when life was good and the Staleys ran the Stanhope Arms, imbibing John and his Burton Rugby Club mates with the best money could buy.
I remember John as a man who could be relied on, who put others first a lot of the time, who did things the old way with respect to the old traditions of life. One of his most likeable features was that he didn't suffer fools gladly.
We will miss him.
