In loving memory of Elizabeth Rose Costin who sadly passed away on 23rd October 2018

Elizabeth Rose Costin. Known as ROSE

Born 11th January 1928 Greenwich London
Lived Deptford London where she went to school grew up and worked
had 3 brothers William (Bill), Thomas and Frank all served after the war in the Navy and Army.

They were all post World War One children so lived through rationing and then later the blitz in London during the second World War, so not an easy start to life, especially as so near to the London docks which saw so much carnage. But there was never any question of leaving London and they were there at the end for the V-E Day calibrations.

Rose meet Eric they courted and then she got Married at age 22 on
14th October 1950 at St Pauls Church Deptford

Rose and Eric started their life together with Roses Mum in Conger house Deptford with what must have been quite a busy if not very hectic household as only two bedroomed it had a very small scullery kitchen which also had to double as the bathroom as the bath had to also double as a table, in it as well was a boiler and wringer for washing.

There are many stories of the Beano coach trips (glorified pup crawl) to the coast and from the family pictures it certainly looks like fun was had by all

And the infamous story of when Mum was on the back of Eric’s motor bike when she stood up to tuck in her skirt and he rode off leaving her stranded in the middle of the road and then not realizing for a few miles (I think this was picked up by Ealing studio’s as I’m positive I’ve seen this in a film)

Then there’s the other story again on the bike when crossing tram lines in I think Lewisham, the bike wheel went down into the tram track only for them to be chased by a perusing tram until the next intersection (again I’m positive I’ve seen this in a film)

Also, the annual working holiday “Hop Picking” in Kent each September the Men Women and Children from all the families got to meet up. Then taking down the furniture from the Oast house loft to set up home for a week or two in what was no more than a shed! sleeping on straw mattresses’ and cooking on open fires after collecting faggots of wood. The Men would then go back to work during the week to return on the Friday for a weekend with family, Malcolm has found memories and recalls it being extremely hard work for the women but you never heard anyone complain.

Rose and Eric moved to Marden Ave; Hayes Bromley in 1952 to a new build council house that they later purchased to what became the family home

Son Malcolm was born 17th September 1952 in Greenwich London
Daughter Kathryn was born 22nd February 1957 in Bromley

Both have many found memories playing with family friends, neighbours and cousins in the garden Rose was always there and many children would come around to play at Aunty Roses house

Once they were both at school Rose returned to work working as a secretary for North American Families Association this gave her the bug to travel repeatedly returning to Canada to see her own extended family, and later taking to cruses with Eric, even when in her 80’s she went to Australia for a wedding she ventured off alone back packing across Australia and as a keen traveller it was very apt that she passed away whilst on a short vacation with family and not on her own at home.

Dedicated mother who was there for all Malcolm and Kathryn’s needs and for all their childhood support whether it be ballet, May Queen for Kathryn or Cubs, Air Cadets for Malcolm she was the Mum that got involved and not just used these as a baby-sitting service….

Later with Eric Rose took Mathew & Christopher to Disney USA and
on a later trip took Anita & Lisa, memories that will be with them for ever.

Rose was a rear breed always been very opinionated never one to sit on the fence and remained extremely Proud of her Scottish heritage and of being a Royalist

Rose was a Grandma not just to her own grandchildren but to so many more
She was loved by all … she was every ones Aunty Rose or Grandma Rose.

Be the first to leave a condolence for the loss of Elizabeth Rose
