  • Dad loved a good chat , laugh and moan so I’m sure he was in his element when he saw you too, he was a Barry lad and loved everyone in the community so much

John, I spent quite a lot of time with you, especially with my Dad, Geoff Phillips, we had some laughs and I always gave as good as I got back to you! Your language in front of me was always getting you a telling off from Dad, but you just used to wink at me, smile and mutter about not sitting with you! I’ll miss our banter and laughs xx

We'll all miss you Uncle John and the town has lost one of its great characters! When I drove around Barry with you as a child (in one of your prized cars), it seemed like literally everyone had a smile or a wave for 'Johnny' and normally copped for some good natured abuse from you in return! I still think I got my life long love of reading and military history from many childhood hours spent trawling through the treasure troves of antiques, military paraphernalia and 'Commando' comics in your lock ups and Nanna and Bampy's house. You were a larger than life character in the stories of all our lives and enriched them all in so many ways (my mum, brother, sister and I all have our own 'Uncle John' tales to tell and they all end up with a good giggle and a smile). Like your mum, you lived a long and full life and were truly one of a kind. Rest in peace Uncle John - the world's a less rich tapestry without you!

  • Lovely tribute Jas, I’ll always remember the way he could make Nanna laugh until she cried, sat in the corner chair wiping the tears of laughter away and telling him to stop! I can still hear her laugh now, then telling him off 5 minutes later 😂 What a character he was ❤️ Xx

Hope you don’t mind me sharing a photo when I first visited John back in hospital in March or April time I took a hamper to him - he was aware of the photo being taken, but turned away as I took it!! & he wouldn’t share his hamper with the nurses !! 🙂
