Dear Helen, Charlotte and Sophie,

I've just found out that Mr Edwards has passed on. I did a search hoping to connect with him but it's too late. There's is nothing that I can say that hasn't already been said. Inspiring, encouraging, motivating are just some of the words that come to mind. I'm sorry a husband is being missed as well as a father.

I remember when he realised that I loved to read and that I had an interest in film, he lent me paperbacks to nurture my interest - 'The Cross and the Switchblade' and 'The Ultimate Warrior' to name a few.

I left Redhill soon after school but I was so fond of him that I remember visiting him at his home in Redhill where he lived close to Wiggie Lane, during one of my early trips from London where I was living.

I still have the pottery mug he made for each member of his form with each persons name on it. That was Bill all over he saw us all as individuals.

The world is a little colder without his warmth.

Best

Aftaar

I am sorry that we didn't get a chance to chat at the lovely memorial service for Bill, but I just wanted you to know how highly I regarded Bill as a colleague during my 11 years at RGS. As so many others have commented, he was always positive, always had a smile on his face, and always had time for you. I hope that the many comments on this website, and everything that was said at the service, give you much solace at this difficult time. Do let us know if there is anything we can do.
With all good wishes
David Thomas (Headmaster, 2001-2012) & Andrea Thomas

Unlike most of the messages here, I have no recollection how I came to know Bill or how we ended up members of the same Curry Club for 15 years - glad we did though! My now far too short experience of Bill was as a good-natured, highly cultured and entertaining dining and travelling companion, far more accomplished than he cared to let on. It won't be the same now without Bill to impress!

I am delighted to support this Charity in memory of Bill, as Chair of the Governors but more importantly father of 3 children who hugely benefited from Bill's encouragement and sense of fun, in the classroom, on the Sports Field and simply every time he saw them. A really exceptional man who the whole school community respected and loved.

Remembering Bill as a big-hearted well-cultured eating, drinking and travelling companion - the city breaks won't be the same without Bill to impress. Bill's seal of approval was always a sign you'd had a good time - because he always had, of course!

I can only reiterate the messages already posted. Bill was a lovely man and really good colleague. When we retired he made us two beautiful pots: one with all the family recorded around the rim. It is a treasured piece, and even more so now. Both our children were taught by him, and were so sad to hear the news. I will never forget him

I was very saddened to learn of Mr Edwards’ passing, he was a fine teacher and the first rugby coach I had at school to make the game more about fun and enjoyment than serious competition. He’s the reason I’m still playing, 22 or so years later. I’m desperately sorry for your loss.

I first knew Bill as a teacher and latterly as a colleague. Bill was so kind and interested in everyone that he had a knack of making you feel very welcome. I toured Ireland with Bill and have very fond memories of spending time with Bill. He did leave a lasting impression on everyone who was lucky enough to know him>

I knew Bill first as a teacher of mine, and latterly as a colleague. He was always so friendly and interested in what I was doing that he made me feel incredibly welcome at school. I toured with Bill to Ireland and have many happy memories of spending time in Dublin with Bill. He was such a kind man, and he will be sadly missed but I do feel that left a really positive impression on everyone who met him.

My whole family was so saddened to hear the sad news about Mr Edwards. Having known him from RSM and RGS I can honestly say that he was the warmest, most genuine man that you could ever hope to meet. As a teacher he was the most enthusiastic and encouraging person, his smile was infectious. He was o e of life's great characters and will be sorely missed xx

Bill would always greet me with a smile and was the kindest and most positive teacher that my 12 year old son Joseph had at RSM and RGS, he might have only worked one day a week, but he was favourite teacher. Joseph helped him at the RSM DT Club after school and Joseph considered it a great honour to be asked, Bill would buy Joseph toblerone which is now chocolate of choice! Joseph’s love of DT and his approach to art is all down to the inspirational Mr Edwards and we are privileged to have known him.
