In loving memory of Raymond Hawkins who sadly passed away on 29th July 2018

It comes with great sadness that Long Eaton Judo Clubs Ray Hawkins 5th Dan passed away peacefully last Sunday following a long illness with Lewy Body Dementia.

Ray was involved with the Long Eaton Judo Club since its beginning in 1961 and was described as the backbone of the club for many years. He was the lead coach, chairman and main organiser until a few years ago when he stepped aside to care for his wife, Mary, who sadly passed away last year with the same illness.

Its fair to say the Long Eaton Judo Club would not be where it is today without all of Ray's commitment and dedication. Over his time he has set the clubs ethos and produced countless judoka's to all levels in judo. He has left a legacy and standard which will be hard to follow and which the club is truly grateful for.

RIP Dad

I first met ray when I was 13 when I started judo, at the age of 17 I had decided to pack it in as I didn’t think I had it in me to active much . Ray thought otherwise and came to my parents house and asked them to persuade me to stay as he believed I had the ability to achieve my black belt . Well I went back and that’s exactly what happend and went on to help run the club at the time with him and represent the club on many occasions. .So without rays belief in what his student could do I would never have achieved what I did . which I am truly thankful. I believe he left the club in very capable hands sometime ago . and my condolences go out to rays family at this time .
