Neil Kaneria passed away unexpectedly on Friday 20th July at the age of 38. His funeral service took place on Saturday 4th August 2018 at All Saints Church, Kerrysdale Avenue, Leicester and was followed by a burial at The Willows Natural Burial Ground, South Croxton, Leicestershire.
Neil was born in Bolton, Lancashire on 31st August 1979. During early childhood he and his older sister Alpa lost both their mother and subsequent stepmother. Due to their father’s shift work and health problems they spent many years being cared for by their grandparents. Neil was bright but he could also be a handful. So in the summer of 1990 Neil moved to Romford in Essex to live with his Uncle Rajni and Auntie Tricia and one year old cousin Simon. By spring 1992 he was living in Oadby in Leicestershire with them, his sister Alpa and new arrival David. In the summer of 1992 whilst at scout camp, Neil was badly scalded and the scars were to remain with him for life. Neil attended Manor High School and Beauchamp College in Oadby. Following the sudden death of his father in 1995 during his GCSEs Neil went to live with his Uncle Dinesh and Auntie Cath and cousins Lisa and Nathan in North Wales. He took his ‘A’ levels at a school on Anglesey and then started a degree in Criminology at Bangor University. It was during the first year of his degree that he began to suffer with the health issues that were to trouble him for the rest of his life. He was however able to complete his degree and work for a while in various jobs until his health problems became more serious. A few years ago he returned to Leicester to be near his sister and although unable to work he would often come over to his aunt and uncle’s home and help David look after his grandmother when his parents went on holiday. He enjoyed helping her with crosswords and generally fussing over her even if he was often exhausted by the end of the day. He also enjoyed playing snooker, reading and watching sport on TV and keeping in contact with his friends both by phone and in person. Neil made many friends over the years including Jon who lives in Sweden and Pete who lives in Northern Ireland. In their correspondence they have both paid tribute to him. Pete said ‘he had a tough life but he had great empathy’ whilst Jon said that ‘through all his troubles, his capacity to care and genuinely want to connect with other people has been constant’.
