Michael was born on December 1, 1939 in Witney Oxfordshire to his parents, Bob and Betty Shortman. He dedicated the majority of his working life to the Metropolitan Police Service for which he attained the rank of Sergeant. He married Elizabeth Ann Donaldson in 1963. They lived in Ashford Common before moving to Sunbury-on-Thames in Middlesex, and subsequently moved to Claygate, Esher in Surrey where they have enjoyed the village live for the past 30 years together.
After retiring from active police duty in early 1999 Michael applied his police experience for the following few years to the Police Federation. He dedicated his remaining time to a number of endeavors including: parts delivery for Thames Water, wedding dress deliveries for Caroline Castigliano, Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Association as a driver for players and VIP’s in the tournament for a number of years, and actively engaged in volunteering in the vegetable garden for Polesden Lacey National Trust property in Surrey.
Michael was a committed, and dedicated police officer, with an extemporarily record. He was an avid snooker and tennis player, and in more recent years became a dab hand at bridge. He was also dedicated to being a supportive father and grandfather.
Michael is survived by Elizabeth and his daughter Sally with his two grandchildren Ben and Gemma, also living in Claygate; and son and daughter-in-law, Simon and Rebecca living in California, USA.
Michael will be cremated on June 19th at 12:20pm, 2018 at Kingston Crematorium, Boner Hill Road, Kingston, KT1 3EZ. A reception will take place on June 19th at 1:30 p.m. at Esher Suite, Imber Court Sports Club, Ember Lane, East Molesey, Surrey KT8 0BT.
All are welcome to attend and celebrate Michael’s life. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Princes Alice Hospice, Esher. The dedicated hospice staff took great care of Michael at home over his remaining few days.
