Alan David Doig (11 May 1957 - 31 May 2018)

I was sad to learn of Alan's death only last year; I must have missed the local media coverage in 2018. It was a pleasure to work with him at Pirehill, and he always gave full support to the Emergency Planning Unit.

Very saddended to learn of Alan's passing some four years ago in 2018. I have read the beautful comments and all say much of the man I strongly recall and came to know well, albeit for one brief year. We worked together on the national Bain UK Fire & Rescue reform programme. Alan was President of the Chief Fire Officer Association and I was his chief executive, appointed on a short term basis as part of Government plans. Whilst I was part of the senior leadership team, I was not in uniformed. Alan took extraordinary steps to ensure I was fully included, respected and informed across all the very many aspects of the reform discussions. Whilst also running Staffordshire Fire & Rescue as Chief Executive and Chief Fire Officer, he always had time to meet and speak with me - often late and long hours. His warm Scottish lilt and a very genuine sense of reality sat easily with his strong and clear strategic vision for the Service. I read in the comments he led through difficult times. That is without doubt. Yet in amongst much angst and high pressure, no matter what, I came away from my service under Alan with a very strong sense of his absolute determination to do what was right, and for all who worked in Fire & Rescue, no matter where or in what brigade or sector - and for the elected governance and the public they served. I met his wife Senga at a national Fire Service dance. I wished I had known her better. I am absolutely certain Senga and their children will hold and cherish Alan as a very special husband and dad indeed. He is someone I dont forget.

Remember Alan well when he joined his kids used to play with two daughters at primary school as we stayed a few yards from each other.

Great friends when Alan worked with Fife Fire and Rescue Service..... loads of fantastic memories..... mainly involving crazy nights out..... Missed Alan and Senga when they left..... miss them now they have gone.......

A very sad loss to all the fire service community and to the people of Staffordshire. RIP boss.

Sad to hear of Alan's passing.Always very supportive whenever we carried out fund raising in Staffs.He also encouraged positive decisions ,when needed,in driver training.RIP Alan,our thoughts are with all your family and friends.

With his sharp wit and Scots humour, Alan was always the pivotal part of any gathering. He loved his family and was a stalwart friend. He leaves many fond memories in our hearts. We will all miss him tremendously.

Alan served with me at The Fire Service College during the 1980's. He was a perfect representative of the College and the Service in general. My wife and I have so many memories of how he and Senga contributed to all that was done there, both professionally and socially, and it was a delight to see how his career developed after all that. How very sad that he was taken away so young but his time on earth will be long remembered and appreciated.

Our families became friends when Alan & Ian served as young firemen together on Kirkcaldy White Watch. The bond never broke no matter how long the time between meetings. Alan's intelligence, humour,warmth and generosity will leave a void in our lives.

Alan was a wonderful leader and a great mentor. I learnt so much from him during my Time with Staffordshire Fire & Rescue. A truly special gentleman. Thank you Alan.

Alan could light up a room with his wit and wisdom, it was an honour to have known him and like all those that had the privilege to meet him I will miss him greatly and I will look back fondly on the laughs we had, especially those on the golf course and at the various 19th holes we visited.

Hello my Wee brother I don’t know if you realise how much I loved you... I may have your nemesis (joke) but you know I will always love you I miss you much my heart aches I will always tell our stories , laughs and memories to my children and grandchildren should I be so lucky to be blessed with them as you were Foerever in my heart

It was a privilege and honour to serve with Alan and to share some good times with Senga and the family for five and half years and beyond our service together. Staffordshire and the whole service will always be indebted for Alan's leadership and success. Taken far, far to early.

It was nothing but an utter privilege and honour to serve as Alan's Deputy for five and half years. Staffordshire FRS owe Alan a debt of gratitude that is difficult to repay as does the UK FRS during a very difficult time. Alan was also an honest, caring and great family man and knowing Senga and them all is a great pleasure. The world is not a better place for his passing and far, far, to early for someone who deserved a much longer life.
