In loving memory of William Jonathan Coombs 'Jon', who sadly passed away on May 24, 2018.
Jon was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family dearly. He leaves his beloved wife, Carmen, daughter Laurie and son Ben, daughter-in-law Terri and grandsons Aiden, Caolan and Liam. He was also a special brother to Janet, brother-in-law and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Jon was born in September 1950 and grew up in Sheffield, Yorkshire, the son of cutler Ronald Coombs and nurse Jean Coombs, where he spent many happy years with them and sister Janet in Worrall.
In 1969 he met his future wife, Carmen, through his sister, Janet - Carmen's French teacher at school. He was 19 and she was just 16. While studying Occupational Psychology at Cardiff University, he proposed to Carmen in 1970. They married in 1972, and settled in Chapeltown, Sheffield.
In September 1976, they had their first child, Laurie Elizabeth. Jon got a job in IT with Burton brewery Ind Coope in 1980 and he and Carmen moved to the town. In May 1980, they added to their family with a son, Benjamin David.
Settling with his family in Newhall, Swadlincote, Jon worked for Allied Breweries for 19 years and then Digica. After illnesses which left him with Type 1 diabetes and epilepsy, Jon left Digica and retrained as a supply teacher. He worked at several schools across Derby and South Derbyshire teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Science, before retiring in 2015.
In 2016 he was diagnosed with COPD and in recent times was in and out of hospital as he tried to manage his condition. Despite his best efforts, Jon's health declined and he was admitted to Burton's Queens Hospital on April 30. Sadly, Jon's condition worsened and he passed away peacefully in hospital on May 24, surrounded by those he loved most.
Jon will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren, and by all who knew and loved him.
