This beautiful message from Rob sums up Jana:
Last year I coached a young lady who had survived breast cancer and had signed up to take part in a triathlon to raise money for other people fighting the disease through a fabulous organisation called the Phoenix Foundation. She came with a team of women, 10 in all, but was one of the least comfortable in the pool and couldn't swim very well. Being the least comfortable though she made sure to come just about EVERY week to the pool, and fought cramps, doubts, and got through 30 mins one week, 35 mins the next week, and soon the full hour. Always with the biggest smile on her face and full of fun, the doubts weren't fear, she knew she'd do it, and was utterly determined to. Like the others it was never in doubt.
Seeing her get out of the lake at Hever Castle after the swim, still with that smile and having a hug with her lake-side was the highlight of my day, and maybe the highlight of all the coaching I've done so far in the sport.
She had received a 5 year all clear (I don't know much about cancer; but I know it's never thought of as gone for good, so this as good as it gets perhaps) only to attend hospital recently for another complaint and for more to be found. After fighting for some time, the cancer spread and today I've found out she's been taken from us.
She did a bloody triathlon 6 months ago. She was awesome. She was lovely. She was Team Phoenix, and she was as much as any other member we currently have or have had, Medway Tri through and through!! I'd like to also think she was my friend.
Bless her, and look after her up there. You are lucky to have her. Whilst her family most of all, but also Team Phoenix, and everyone that knew her are left with a gaping hole where she once was and only remembering how she filled it with smiles and laughter and determination is going to get everyone of them through it.
This disease has to be fought, and we have to win someday.
Take care Jana xxx
