In loving memory of Philip Trout who passed away very suddenly on 28th February 2018.

Phil's family would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all of the the love and respect that you have shown Phil over the years. In his memory we ask that donations are made to the charity MIND a charity that was close to Phil's heart.

MIND works tirelessly to make sure everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets both support and respect. Every year, one in four people will experience a mental health problem and no one should have to face a mental health problem alone. Mind supports millions of people every year through their helpline, information services and online communities and also has a network of local Minds providing face to face services tailored to communities across England and Wales.

We believe that everybody experiencing a mental health problem should be empowered to make their own choices about their treatment and recovery, be able to access the services they need and should be treated fairly, positively and with respect.

Phil supported many disadvantaged and vulnerable adults through his work with the Salvation Army, both at The Well in Croydon and more recently with the homeless community in Brighton. Our loss is hard to bare and Phil has gone too soon but we know that he is finally at peace and will live on in our hearts and in our memories for all eternity.

Phil and Sue. My sister Catherine found this photo recently So sorry to hear this awful news. So many fond memories of long summers spent in Croydon. Phil was fun and funny- just the coolest guy I knew. Memories of those great times will last always.

  • When I posted this photo, I was limited in the number of words I could write. There was so much more I wanted to say. Phil, together with his sister Sue were part of our “Croydon family”. Back in the mid 60s until the early 70s, our family used to travel down from Leeds to spend the long summer holidays in my uncle’s house in Blenheim Crescent. Me, my two bothers and sister got to know Phil and Sue. We also knew Julian and Lynne who lived in the same street. Those summers were spent all together playing in the park behind my uncle’s house ( cricket, British bulldog, football etc) Then there was our pavement club in the evening. We played games like Risk and Monopoly and sardines for hours and hours. And as we became teenagers, spent a lot of time listening to music in Phil’s lounge, playing air guitar, air drums, saxophone, keyboards- or just dancing around to the music of the day - Dance to the music! Phil was the expert at all of this! Wonderful memories- so sad to hear news of his passing so long after it happened. But I will treasure those summer memories for ever.

I only heard this awful news a few weeks ago. Since then, the world has become a strange place.
I dreamt about you last night Phil. We were in the back room at Uncle John’s house with lots of people. You were the only one I knew. I said, “ how the devil are you Phil - you haven’t changed a bit!” I wake up, and all the memories of those long summer holidays years ago came flooding back. Although my family lived in Leeds, we always made sure the long summer breaks were spent in Uncle John’s house in Blenheim Crescent. In the same road, all our friends - Julian, Lynne, you and your fab sister Sue. Seemingly endless days, playing cricket, football and British bulldog in the park. The “pavement club” was crazy! Then, playing Monopoly and Risk for hours and hours. Dancing around in your sitting room to “dance to the music” and loads of other great songs. And lots of air guitar!
We will always cherish the memories of those long crazy summer days.
Rest in peace Phil. The coolest guy I ever knew.

Uncle Phil, I miss you! Not a day goes by where I don't think of you. Whether I am listening to some Eva or jamming out to some Marley I always think of you because I know how much you appreciated a great song. I have a son now called Cooper, 8 months old and already appreciating some reggae rhythm so I think I am doing alright.

You have forever left an imprint on all of us. I am blessed to have known you.

Lots of Love

Kate

I first met Phil way back in 1962 during a visit to my grandparents’ home in South Croydon and struck up a friendship with him which lasted over 20 years.
He was always a funny and cheerful person greatly liked by myself, both my brothers and sister.
I last saw him in 1986 at my 33rd birthday party and we enjoyed some epic air guitar moments to tracks by Led Zeppelin and Jimi HendrixI lost touch with him after that, but he had and still has a special place in my heart.Great guy.Very sad to learn of his passing.
My condolences and regards to all his family and friends.
John from no. 52.

Looking back, I think I first met Phil at one of the many famous Trout barbecues where he always brought wonderful food. It was only then that I was advised that he was an ex chef.
The celebration service held at the citadel earlier this month was a credit to all that took part. I particularly wanted to mention the part that the Salvation Army played in this including people who travelled in from far and wide. Your flowers Susan were absolutely stunning, you have such a talent. I also wanted to commend Katie for her very personal unusual arrangement of flowers and also for her moving, personal and uplifting reading. I was not at the crematorium but heard that Jessica did her father proud, supported by her brother Joshua. Beryl discharged herself from hospital to ensure that she was there to play her part - doesn’t that say something when people go above and beyond to do that!
It was lovely to see all the various photos of Phil at the wake especially him with the family and his beloved children.
Finally the wake. The music was so Phil, a great selection that I could have listened to all day. The final piece - Layla, what a song to finish with!

Lots of love to you all xx

A wonderful person, father, son, brother, friend and a hero has unfortunately crossed over, leaving a void in hearts but with some wonderful memories to bring a smile to your face.
Hero: If it wasn't for Phil, we may not have any family businesses left at all. For during those terrible riots in 2011 he warned us these rioters were on their way to Reeves Corner, and with that we were able to be there to at least protect part of the shop as watching the other burn to the ground. So we thank you Phil, from the bottom of our hearts your our hero and a friend. I believe that you are with friends and family passed now so enjoy. As to friends and family I pray your hearts will be enlightened for having him in your life for the time he was here. Heartfelt sympathies from Trevor, Annette and Family x
