Brian Hodder (27 Oct 1941 - 24 Feb 2018)

Well, over a year gone since you were cruelly taken from us and not a day goes past when I don’t think of you, an absolute Legend. Now his bench proudly sits a his home ground of Truro with bird droppings all over it (disrespectful birds honestly)

Grandad and I had some great times together. From watching the cricket on the tv to sitting at Edgbaston watching the t20 finals day or making a visit to the Ganges in Truro. Which involves my story about Grandad.

So... I’m sat minding my own business when our food comes (which is usually what happens when you order food) and the waiter says “this is your madras mr. Brian” and “here is your curry young man”. So we start eating and I notice and say to my self gee wiz this is hot only for grandad to drop the bombshell of “hmmm, mines actually quite mild now at the time I was 7 or 8 maybe younger and the heat starts to hit me.

I miss him and not a single cricket match will I play without staring to the sky as I walk out to make sure he’s watching. Annoying bugger I never seem to do well when he came to watch me when he was rightfully ruling and roaming my fridge... I mean the world

Brian (Sgt Bilko to give him his stage name) Hodder brightened a number of Golf Dinners over the years with his after dinner speeches, with John Shaw as his 'roadie'. Great Memories.

I first met Brian approximately 40 years ago when my not so illustrious teaching career took me to Arbishop Williams. There Brian was very much established in his own kingdom. A friendship soon developed based on a love of sport and the amber nectar.
Brian developed into a very good after dinner speaker after securing early retirement from the chalk face. He began his performance with; For those of you that don’t know me I originate from the Duchy of Cornwall, have a high intellectual forebrow,and I don’t drive. People who have seen me bat would say I don’t cut or pull either! But I have completed the cricketers double on many occasions, that is always in bed before breakfast and 100 pints a season on other people’s money!
In later years the triumvirate of Brian, Rick Coleman and myself watched cricket together at Edgbaston where Brian was christened the Owl because his wisdom was infinite (?)
A lasting memory of Brian at Edgbaston was a glass of wine in one hand, a pork pie in the other, admonishing his dear wife Jenny for not holding a sandwich for him which he had been offered. He had small hands but a very good appetite and thirst!

Be upstanding for 'The Hod'...Absolute legend.

It was always a learning process with Hod and one of the most important lessons was around the timing of the dive at slip. If you dived too early then you had time to get back to your feet & chase after the ball but a late dive convinced no one, especially the other slips & gully who would gently persuade you that it was indeed "your" ball. The Hod was an obvious master & in all my years standing beside him I never saw him chase the ball - a true master! Another skill of his was the artful "Jug Avoidance" and again he was masterful in his application in all conditions - watching his face when awarded 4 leg byes when he was on 47 was something never to be forgotten! Sadly missed.
