A true gent and always full of fun. He asked if he could join in one of my 6-a-side games once in Houston and not having played for a number of years, he quickly discovered that it wasn't quite that easy to suddenly enter a competitive league match with 20 year old's. After only 60 seconds I seriously thought he was going to keel over. I discreetly encouraged him to leave the field not wanting to be responsible for his demise. I hope he looks back fondly on the moment now and forgives me for the panic attack I was having on his behalf.
John I know you messaged me in February and I didn't reply. So sorry.
RIP John mate. Up the Imps this weekend at Wembley! I know you were thinking of going.

  • just read the news today. Shocked and saddened. John was a real gent - a Sperry legend and wll be surely missed. The picture tells it how I remember him - always having a laugh and great fun to be around. Will never forget his Karaoke rendition of Lay Lady Lay in Aviators (I think). Fond memories indeed. Thank you John RIP.

Friends since Indonesia 1986. Many adventures, many more planned. Many shared friends. A companion epicurean bon vivant. A reciprocal pillar with an open ear and a soft shoulder. Medicinal comedy always prescribed. A friend of all cultures and studiously well read on all.

I was fortunate that I had to make an unplanned visit to the UK in January. The same time, that normally, we would meet every year in The Cow, but this year I really couldn’t make it. A family emergency changed that and I am so thankful. Fate indeed.
If anyone finds themselves in London, visit The Cow (Westborne Park Rd) and raise a pint. I will. There will be an unimaginable empty space, but I know he will be there.

Bye my friend. Last adventure? Who knows. But I have the stories.

Brian Clements donated £20 in memory of John

Our first adventure together was way back in the 70's - island hopping in Greece...and what an adventure it was too. Never a dull moment. John was always interested in the culture and people of the countries he either visited or resided. His thirst for knowledge was ferocious. A gentle generous friend who I never fell out with, though I would never see him from one end of the year to another we always picked up where we had left off before. He was my North, my South, my East and West. He was my best mate....RIP John you will be missed.

There’s no word that can express how sorry I am to hear about the death of John.

I have met John here in Kazakhstan 12 years ago and we’ve became a good friends. John was extremely nice and such a fun-loving person. I will never forget his kindness.

The last year we had a stunning pub-crawling in Great London.

I will miss you.
