Mum
She came into this world on 08/11/1935 youngest daughter of father Fred and mother Emily she had 3 sisters Rita, the late Beryl, and Dee, living in Royston, Hertfordshire, a pretty girl who drank with her friends in Bassingborne. She took the eye of a young RAF corporal who was serving behind the bar he was brave enough to tell her she was the one, not sure mum was impressed ... eventually she reciprocated and they were married. They had their first child Terry in 1959 and their second Nigel in 1961, when the boys were 3 and 1 the family were deployed to RAF Changi in Singapore, she was an adventurous woman so she agreed to take the family across the world stopping at Turkey and India before spending 6 weeks in a Malayan hotel before finally being housed in Singapore. In 1965 the family flew back to the UK we moved to Hemswell as dad was posted to Scampton they put down their first roots in Torksey Avenue in Saxilby and bought a new house.
Mum brought us both up, she taught us how to cook, wash iron she wanted her boys to be self sufficient her food was the best, hard to follow even for us as dad was always abroad with his work .
She had the shock of her life when dad suddenly passed away in 1994 at the age of 58, we helped her through our joint grief , a few years later her grandsons came along, Benjamin in 1996 and Thomas in 1998 this became her world having them to visit on alternate weekends they would cook, build puzzles and play cards this was her life after dad.
So sad that they never got to meet their grandad but mum always took them regularly to visit him in the churchyard, they were so fond of their granny you were an inspiration to them both
She enjoyed bi-annual holidays with one of her best friend Eileen going to various places all over the World
As she aged it was obvious she had the early signs of dementia we took her to the doctors eventually for her own safety she was admitted to a secure home.
We visited her often and have seen the fatal deterioration of the disease over three years. we have seen her memories regress to her past and ultimately to not recognising any of us and mumbling to not understanding what she was trying to say but now and again there was the occasional recognition of words and memories and smiles that will be in our hearts forever
Now you’re back with dad and free from pain you can watch over us all and guide us, we love you.
Granny
There are soo many fond memories we could talk about, from Christmases you spent with us to the holiday you accompanied us on to St Minver when we were young, to the special visits to Scrummies Café in Saxilby for a Milkshake and a Fry up. But the overall memories that stick in both our minds are the alternate weekends all the way through our childhoods to our late teens we would share with you. The times we would spend with you were special and great fun.
We would arrive on Fridays after school, and stay over the weekend. We would always look forward to a proper home cooked dinner in the evening, with home grown vegetables out of the garden, which you spent so much time and pride over. We will never forget the awesome Steak and Kidney Pudding you used to make, as well as your home made Fruit Pies. The evening would always consist of the three TV soaps and A Question of Sport with Sue Barker before a warm cup of Ovaltine before bed. Our Saturdays consisted of visits to close friends Mrs Lang and Mrs Brown as well as completing puzzles, playing card and board games, and of course building our Lego toys.
The last few years watching you deteriorate have been very difficult for us, but knowing the memories we shared and the fun we experienced will always be cherished this has helped us both get through them. Rest in peace Granny we will continue to make you a proud grandparent, and hopefully we can replicate some of your cooking skills in the future.
We love you Ben and Tom xxxxxx
