In loving memory of Dennis Hartshorn who sadly passed away on 18th December 2017.
Dennis, known to all as Den, was born at Scarsdale Hospital in 1949 to Kenneth and May Hartshorn. For the first few years of his life, Den lived on Sluggards Row, Grasmoor before moving to Statham Avenue, Tupton. He attended schools in Grassmoor and North Wingfield before starting an apprenticeship at Brian Donkins. He left there in the late 1960s to join the Royal Corps of Transport. He left the army in 1972, after being injured in Northern Ireland.
In the 70s Den ran his own haulage business for a time, before joining Chesterfield Transport as a bus driver and driving instructor. In 1981, Den met Tracy Peploe and they started dating in May 1982, marrying just three months later on 27th August. Den and Tracy had two children; Paul in 1983 and Amy in 1986. Unhappy with the privatisation of public transport, Den once again started his own haulage company, Dennis Hartshorn Transport. Ill-health forced his early retirement in 1990.
Den continued to try to live an active life, joining Staveley Rifle and Pistol Club, becoming chief Range officer. He was also a good friend who went out of his way to help others.
He was diagnosed cancer in mid 2016, and fought a long and brave battle against the disease.
A devoted and much loved husband, father and grandfather, Den is missed by everyone who knew him, not least by his loving wife, Tracy and devoted children Paul and Amy.
His funeral will take place on Thursday 4th January 2018 at 9.30am at Brimington Crematorium followed by a get together at The Red Lion in Brimington. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that people make a donation to either one of the two charities listed on this page or to a cancer charity of their choice.
