In loving memory of Robert John 'Bob' Sutton who sadly passed away on 25th September 2017
Son of John and Pamela and older brother to Jenny, Robert grew up in Minster, Kent before joining the RAF as an aircraft technician. It was whilst he was based at RAF Marham that he met Eileen and they fell in love. They married in 1981 and, with an instant family of three children – Jacqui, Lee and Seonaid, they moved to RAF Valley. He took on the role of dad to Eileen’s three children and brought them up as his own. Friends have been noted to say that they loved spending time at the house as it showed them what a real family was like. Everyone was welcomed and made to feel at home.
There were several more moves over the years before, having also seen active duty during the Gulf War or 1990, Robert and Eileen put down permanent roots in Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln. They embraced “civilian” life and made many friends.
When grandchildren came along Robert revelled in the role of “Papa Rob” to Daniel, Emilie and William and all three grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed time spent with Nana and Papa Rob. Their house was filled with love and laughter.
A larger than life character, Robert loved a good party. Summer BBQs, quiz nights at the local pub and social evenings at the bowling alley were part and parcel of their social life. Once all the children left home Robert and Eileen enjoyed foreign holidays, with cruises and trips to America amongst their favourites. Life was for living.
In 2013 Eileen was diagnosed with cancer and so began a two year battle against the disease. Robert was by her side every step of the way – she was the love of his life and he was devastated when she lost her battle in 2015.
Sadly, in 2016, Robert was diagnosed with lung cancer. Throughout the treatments, and despite being told that the cancer was terminal, Robert remained positive and was always talking about what he was going to do when he felt better. Right up to the end he was determined that he was going to get well enough to go up to the pub for quiz night. That was just the kind of man he was.
Robert lost his battle with cancer on Monday 25th September 2017 and whilst he will be missed by all of his family, they are comforted by the fact that he is finally out of pain and perhaps he is now cruising the heavens with his beloved wife Eileen.
