This smiling picture is of John at his 75th birthday party, a wonderful gathering . John said then it was the best day of his life.
He'd been overwhelmed that morning by the gift from his family of a beautifully printed bound book of his travel adventures which he'd emailed over the years to his many international friends.
John was beloved by many friends and family, including his wife of 46 years Anne; sons Thomas and Christopher; daughter-in-law Alanna; and grandchildren Ayla and Micah.
John loved his work at the Atomic Energy Authority, Queen Mary College and School of Oriental and African Studies. It was a tribute to him that colleagues from all these institutions were at his inspiring funeral service at St Gabriel's, the crematorium and the reception afterwards at St Gabriel's Church Hall.
